Вельвет: Стал известен новый проект Муря) Jonathan Rhys Meyers will star as the eponymous hero of Omega Entertainment and Baldwin Entertainment Group's "Mandrake," with "The Scorpion King" helmer Chuck Russell behind the camera, the backers said Tuesday. Billed as an updated take on the classic Hearst comic book, the Mandrake character is an extreme escape artist embroiled in international espionage. "Mandrake" marks the first picture to result from Omega and Baldwin's first-look production deal. Omega is financing and selling worldwide and producing together with Baldwin and Hyde Park Entertainment. The film is scheduled to shoot early next year in China and the U.S. "This is a rare opportunity to reinvent one of the all-time classic comic book characters and create a new kind of hero for international audiences," Russell said. BEG chief Howard Baldwin said he is pleased to be in business with Omega and Hearst in bringing "Mandrake" to the big screen. Omega Entertainment was formed in 2006 by Markus Barmettler and Enrique Steiger, who hired former Lakeshore Entertainment president Peter Rogers as president of its operations. Baldwin's credits include the biopic "Ray," which earned an Oscar for star Jamie Foxx. Future projects include a big-screen adaptation of the classic Ayn Rand novel "Atlas Shrugged," to star Angelina Jolie and be directed by Vadim Perelman.

Strongbow Cider, for those of you who don’t know (and that would be me) is an alcoholic beverage that is approximately 5.3% alcohol by volume, which is about the strength of a regular beer. According to the Sun, he had just heard that his mother had died: Geraldine Meyers, 50, passed away after a sudden illness in the Mercy Hospital in Cork at 7am. Jonathan, 30, was spotted walking the streets of London with the extra-strength cider. The thing that makes this sad is that thirty-year-old Jonathan has already spent two stints in rehab, and swore that he’d never take a drink again: A notorious partier, he’s recently sworn off alcohol. “I didn’t drink until I was 25, and I never drank every day, but when I did, it was bad. It would be a couple of days that just wouldn’t work out for me, waking up with a hangover. Drink doesn’t fit into the groove of where my life is going.” Rhys Meyers, now 30, has been in rehab twice. “I want to do really good things with my life,” he says. “And drinking is not synonymous with that. The [Richard] Burton days, the [Peter] O’Toole days, they are gone.” And, in another interview, he says that he doesn’t want to fritter away his career on drink: You live in LA now. What’s your life like there? I’m quite insular when I’m working. I live very healthily – I have done for a while now. My big thing is going to the gym. It’s very LA. [This interview was conducted before Jonathan was arrested this week for public drunkenness and breach of the peace in Dublin.] Why did you stop? I got bored. It’s not a way to live. I stopped. I wanted different things. Such as? Better work. My health. If you go out and party six nights a week in your twenties, you think you’re invincible. Then you find at 35 you’re not getting good roles any more because you’re a fat ugly f***, because you’ve been out hitting the booze for years, doing drugs and screwing different girls. Growing up in Ireland, I saw many a handsome young man walk into the bar with great dreams. Then I saw the same man sitting there 15 years later, still nursing the pint. Don’t you miss drinking? Sometimes it would be nice to go out and go on a bender but no, not really. I don’t like hangovers. It’s just not my deal any more. Staying sober is a very difficult thing to do, as anyone who struggles with any sort of addiction can attest. It isn’t a day-to-day decision, it is a minute-to-minute decision, sometimes even a second-to-second decision. You can’t let your guard down even for a second or you’re back at square one again. It’s at times like this, when bad things happen, that you really have to be on your guard against any sort of temptation. Falling off the wagon was bad enough, but to add the news of his mother’s death when he was already at a low point probably just compounded the bad situation. Perhaps Jonathan has learned that, when it comes to things like this, you can never say “never”. “I’ll never drink again,” is a pretty heady statement to make, and one that is basically guaranteed to set you up for failure. Something like, “I’ll do the best I can with what I’ve learned to make good decisions and to stay away from situations that might tempt me to drink,” is longer, but possibly more accurate. Funeral attendants used three large black umbrellas to prevent the star or his family from being photographed by the media as hundreds of friends and locals gathered to pay their last respects. The mother-of-four died suddenly on Tuesday in the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) after a short illness. Rhys Meyers was joined by his brothers Alan, Paul and Jamie, his mother's partner John and her former husband Johnny O'Keeffe. Hundreds of people gathered in freezing temperatures at Barry Brothers funeral home -- not far from Ms Meyers' Hazelbrook house. Actors Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy are expected to attend today's funeral in Cork. Rhys Meyers, wearing a grey suit, walked hand-in-hand with girlfriend Reema Hammer into the funeral home. Ms Meyers' remains were brought the short distance to St Joseph's Church, Spring Hill where the coffin was met by Fr Noel O'Sullivan. She will be buried today, after Requiem Mass at 11am in St Joseph's, at St Catherine's Cemetery, Kilcully. Geri Meyers had been in poor health in recent years but her sudden death still shocked her family and friends. Her death brought a flood of tributes and expressions of sympathy from the Irish entertainment world. Director Kirsten Sheridan, daughter of award-winning director Jim Sheridan, said: "Our thoughts are certainly with Jonathan at this time." Призы будут вручены на пресс-конференции. Виной всему – забастовка сценаристов, продолжающаяся уже более двух месяцев. Еще в ноябре сценаристы заявили, что не намерены писать сценарий церемонии вручения "Золотых глобусов", и слово свое сдержали. Более того: 4 января Гильдию сценаристов поддержала Гильдия актеров, объявившая церемонии бойкот (на вручении отказались присутствовать актеры, номинированные на "Золотой глобус" и приглашенные в качестве ведущих церемонии). Наибольшие убытки в ситуации с бойкотом "Глобуса" понесли, само собой, телевизионщики, рассчитывавшие показать церемонию в прямом эфире. Теперь остается лишь гадать, сколько голливудского (и не только) народу соберется на вышеупомянутой пресс-конференции. И не произойдет ли нечто подобное и с церемонией вручения "Оскаров"…

Two of the feature films - ‘Sally’s Irish Rogue’, ‘This Other Eden’ and have until recently been locked in British and American archive vaults and will screen in the coming weeks at the IFI. With the support of Ardmore Studios and Managing Director Kevin Moriarty, the films have been found, restored and are repatriated for presentation and preservation in the Irish Film Archive. ‘Home is the Hero’ was donated to the Archive by Vincent Dowling and this will be the first screening of the restored 35mm print funded by the Hertiage Council. Kasandra O’Connell, Head of the Irish Film Archive at the IFI said: “The restoration and repatriation of these early Ardmore productions is a fitting way to celebrate the studios' 50 year heritage. The Irish Film Archive is pleased to be able to add these films to the National film collection and we are honoured that Minister Cullen will be joining us as we pay tribute to the legacy of Ardmore.” ‘Home is the Hero’ was the first film to go into production in the newly formed Ardmore Studios. Directed by American Fielder Cook, the script is by Henry Keating from the 1952 stage play of the same name by Walter Macken. ‘Home is the Hero’ tells the story of Paddo O’Reilly (beautifully played by Macken himself), ‘the Goliath of Galway’, who is released from prison after a five-year conviction for killing the father of his son’s girlfriend, and his attempts to re-establish his role as head of the family, entering into conflict with his wife Daylia (Eileen Crowe), his daughter, Josie (Joan O’Hara), and his assertive son Willie (played by Arthur Kennedy). The IFI is delighted to announce that the screening will be introduced by Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen, T.D. The first Ardmore film production to be released in cinemas, ‘Sally’s Irish Rogue’ received its world premiere at the 1958 Cork Film Festival. Based on the George Shiels stage play The New Gossoon, and directed by George Pollock, it was one of the few Irish-made films of the 1950s to get an American release, probably due to the popularity at the time of its star Julie Harris. Harris (the Sally of the title) is engaged to the roguish, restless Luke (Tim Seely) who is more interested in motorcycles and other women than in settling down or the farm he is about to inherit. This film was digitally re-mastered from elements preserved at the British Film Institute. The first Irish feature to be directed by a woman - Muriel Box, ‘This Other Eden’ is a caustic comedy set in 1945 where the erection of a statue of patriot martyr Jack Carberry creates problems in a small town. The film explores the traumatic legacy of the Civil War, and in particular the impact of the death of Michael Collins on successive generations. Given that the producer Emmet Dalton was with Collins the day he was shot, some critics have speculated that this film was an attempt to redress, even rewrite the history of that time. However, with a fine supporting cast of Abbey players and star turns from Milo O’Shea and Hilton Edwards, ‘This Other Eden’ is not just a critique of the past but a witty and complex comment on an emergent modern Ireland. After spending much of her working life in cinema, my wife was always going to bump into people she knew, people who knew one of our daughters – a film publicist – or people who shared her intimate knowledge of other big events on the film calendar. I have walked the red carpet at Cannes, but only as her guest. (I also walked the red carpet in Abu Dhabi, but only because I was drawn into the slipstream of the Antonio Banderas entourage.) When I muttered about delays at the accreditation desk or box office, I was told: “This is orderly and calm compared with the Croisette.” And of course, everyone in the family knows a great deal more about the movies themselves. The last time we all went to the cinema together was for Bend It Like Beckham. Studying the knowing expressions on their faces was like watching beings from another planet. My wife knew the director, Gurinder Chadha, and had once been called upon to chaperone one of the stars, Keira Knightley. The character of Knightley’s screen mother, who grandly disapproved of her daughter’s passion for football, was played by Juliet Stevenson but modelled on my wife’s closest colleague. Our elder daughter had worked with Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who played the girls’ coach. For once, I could not even turn to my younger daughter Nathalie for solidarity. Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers is now a fully paid-up member of the club. The Tudors star is reported to have recently checked into rehab in England in a bid to deal with a drink problem. Suspicions arose when the Cork-reared actor failed to show at the IFTAs in Dublin earlier this month, where his acclaimed TV series The Tudors won 10 awards. The day before, he was allegedly spotted buying spirits in London. He also missed the Oscar Wilde Awards in LA, the annual celebration of the Irish in Hollywood, which is staged just before the Academy Awards. Before filming the last series of The Tudors, producers insisted that he steer clear of alcohol, with his behaviour monitored by minders. "He is one of the nicest guys in the world, he's a pleasure to work with," revealed a Tudors insider. "He has his demons all right, and he's trying to cope with them as best he can. I couldn't have coped with even 2pc of what's being written about him. He is also great with children. If any kids ever come on the set he's really nice to them. He gets down and talks to them face to face and makes sure they get autographs and whatever they want. He's brilliant that way." The next series of The Tudors won't start filming here until June, which should give him a chance to get back on track. His natural father John O'Keeffe, who lives in Spain and separated from Jonathan's mum when he was a child, has appealed to Jonathan to sort out his problems. Part of the problem may be his upbringing. John left Jonathan's mum Geraldine when the boy was just three. He moved to England, taking two of their four boys with him, leaving Geraldine to raise Jonathan and another brother. He had a troubled childhood, spending time in an orphanage and being expelled from school. His mother, who he loved dearly, drank a lot and didn't seem to be able to cope with him properly. So Jonathan asked a local farmer named Christopher Crofts if he could stay with him for a while. Openly gay, Crofts had children of his own. He became a guardian for Jonathan, and was given the legal power to sign papers whenever Jonathan was away. But eyebrows were raised over the relationship. Crofts said: "I always felt he chose me. We've always had a father/son relationship. I felt that he needed some stability and structure in his life." And it seemed to work... for a while. Jonathan's first big break was in Michael Collins, when Neil Jordan cast him as the man who shot the Free State leader. Jordan said at the time: "He looks like a young Tom Cruise. He came into the casting session with alarming certainty. He's obviously gifted." After that, his career took off but problems soon surfaced. A friend said: "Jonny had always been on the brink of going off the rails. He had a difficult childhood and he's screwed up and wild." He later spent time in rehab in both the US and the UK. "I didn't start drinking until I was 25. Since then I've been drunk maybe a dozen and a half times. When I do I'm like Bambi. I'm all over the place, hopeless, like a 16-year-old kid. People notice," said Jonathan. And they did indeed notice when he turned up in Dublin Airport in November 2007, after apparently enjoying an all-night session. He was arrested by Gardai and charged with being drunk and in breach of the peace. In London the next day he was pictured with an early morning can of cider in his hand. Then came the news that his mother had died in Cork, aged just 50. Heartbroken Jonathan flew back for the funeral, where he was comforted by, among others, his old acting pal Colin Farrell. Jonathan has also been linked to a long series of beauties from socialite and model Cha Cha Seigne, who friends say remains the love of his life, to actress Toni Colette and an on/off affair with heiress Reena Hammer. Audiences and critics were stunned by his performance as the young Henry VIII in Showtime's elegant series, "The Tudors," which begins its third season on April 5. But, like Henry, Rhys Meyers is battling his own dragons. "Even though I've had the body of work I've had, and the success I've had, I do not rest on my laurels whatsoever," he says in a quiet guest room at a hotel here. "Everything I've done up till now has been an apprenticeship. I haven't even started to do my real work yet. I haven't really hit the stride yet." He's always compelled to exceed himself, he confesses. "I think it's secretly demanded of you by whoever gave you the gift. Also people demand improvement because they're paying money to sit down and watch you, so you'd better get better." Though he never had an acting lesson, Rhys Meyers has been working as an actor since he was 18. "I got paid 20 grand for my first film. And that's the lowest I ever got paid," he says. Before he donned Henry's crown, Rhys Meyers costarred in "Velvet Goldmine," "Bend it Like Beckham" and Woody Allen's "Match Point." But American audiences first became enamored of his sinewy good looks and intriguing acting style on the miniseries, "Elvis," where he personified the "king" of another era. Playing those roles was not as difficult as Henry, says Rhys Meyers, who's wearing a black tuxedo jacket with satin lapels, acid-washed jeans and tan cowboy boots. "The hardest part about playing Henry has always been the hardest part about playing Henry. It's not like when I played Elvis or even 'Match Point' where I could look in the mirror and I could see the character. I can't look in the mirror and see Henry. I have to see my own version of Henry," he says. "Yet none of the actors who are in the series look anything like the people they're playing. But I'm the only one that gets any flak for it because Henry was so immortalized by Holbein's paintings. That's not necessarily what Henry looked like. It's just great art," he says. "History has a way of skewing people's view. Playing Henry can be very, very difficult at times but it's also very, very freeing because there's not one person in the world - I don't care how many books they've read - there's not one person in the world who can tell me what Henry talked like, what he walked like, how he behaved himself. Nobody can tell me absolutely that that's the way it was because they don't know. It's all guess work." Rhys Meyers grew up in Cork County, Ireland with three younger brothers. His father is a freelance musician, who lives in the south of Spain. His mother mostly reared the children and did volunteer work. "My dad was around a bit," says Rhys Meyers, "but as a musician, they have to travel the roads." Maybe Rhys Meyers inherited his wanderlust from his father because he loves to travel. He's explored Morocco, the Sudan, Egypt, Tibet, Nepal. "I liked traveling when I was younger, now I travel for work," he says. "When I was young I just traveled. My plan was to travel, work, travel, work. So I haven't done some of my own traveling for a while, but I will," he pauses. "I've had a lot of holidays booked and canceled in my life which also makes it very, very difficult to have a relationship because moving the way an actor moves is the same way an arch criminal moves: they've got to GO (he snaps his fingers). If you get a phone call from Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese on the eleventh hour, you've been offered this role - bang, gone. Which is why I've stayed away from marriage and children so I can be the gypsy if I want to." Though he has no sweetheart, nor is he looking, he says, "I think, I'd like to do that (marry) at some point in my life. But I just turned 31 and it's all about my work right how. I've got a good body of work, a bunch of nominations and some awards and now is the time to go forward and do proper, real male roles because I worked through my 20s. "It's very difficult to cast somebody in their 20s because you can only cast them as a teenager and they don't really have the experience to play the male roles yet. So I think it's when you get into your 30s that those roles actually come." Even so, Rhys Meyers has been acting since he was a boy. "As a kid I spent an awful lot of time pretending I was somebody else," he admits. "I think growing up in the 1980s wasn't very exciting so you kind of create this secret life of an alternate person. You pretend to be whatever you need to be that day, so you live in that dream world. So it's very easy to be an actor. I did a lot of acting when I was a kid. Not professionally, just to get myself in and out of trouble." Jill Scott is known as a singer, but has landed a plum part in HBO's appealing new series, "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," premiering Sunday. The series was produced by Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") and Sydney Pollack ("Tootsie"), both of whom have since died. This is Scott's first big acting role, but she says she wasn't afraid to try playing the saucy entrepreneur from Botswana. "If someone as kind and as gentle and as genius as Anthony Minghella has faith in you, it doesn't hurt," she says. "You can't help but have faith in yourself. When I walked around and people would call me 'Mma Ramotswe,' 'Oh, hello, Mma Ramotswe' - automatically, they heard I was playing the role and then I became her whether I was on set or not. It is a challenge. We do have dialect coaching every day, every single day. I did have to wear some padding. I wasn't pregnant at the time when I first did the film, so there was padding and it was hot. It was sometimes 110 degrees in the morning. But when you have an opportunity to play a character who is so big, who is so warm and open, the challenges kind of melt away and you just want to do good work, period." Eric McCormack is starring in the new sci-fi movie, "Alien Territory," opening April 3. In a way it was science fiction that first attracted him to acting. "I was about 9 when I realized that Don Adams, that was his job. To be Maxwell Smart was his job, and he made money at it. I thought, 'That's all I want to do.' My parents thought it would change, and they did the traditional, 'You should have something to fall back on.' They went to my grade 11 theater teacher, who was my mentor, and they said, 'We're worried that he's taking this very seriously.' And he said, 'Don't stop him.'" For people who just can't get enough of "Gilmore Girls" there's one more chance to suffer the camaraderie of Lorelai and her precocious daughter when the show moves to Soapnet on April 4. Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai, says that she wanted to be an actor, but really felt she should do something more practical. "I started in a conservatory program at NYU. I was 17 when I went to college because I had skipped a grade and it just didn't make any sense to me. I come from a pretty academic family, so to be in that training program then just felt not where I wanted to be yet. I had a lot of friends who were in big colleges. The current season includes third wife Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), the woman who was "probably the great love of his life," Meyers said, and less-cherished wife No. 4, Anne of Cleves, played by pop star Joss Stone. Meyers has the intense, pouty-lipped look that makes him a natural for bedroom scenes. She just has to do her Leaving Cert first. Susan Daly reports Turning 18 is a coming of age for most girls, but for young Irish actress Sarah Bolger it has been more of a rude awakening. Seven years ago, she was the cute older kid from Jim Sheridan's Oscar-nominated movie, In America, acting alongside her younger sister Emma. Now, sex is suddenly on the agenda. "It's madness," she says, shaking her head. "People think that now that I'm 18 it's all right to, like, ask me about sex and stuff. I was in Berlin [where she won a prestigious European Shooting Star award in February] and this interviewer asked, 'So who would you like to jump into bed with?' We had been talking about Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, so I'm sure he just wanted me to say him." That interviewer's assumption that the Dublin teen might be, let's say, worldy-wise stemmed from her association with the TV series The Tudors, which stars Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as the randiest King Henry VIII since Sid James in Carry On Henry. Sarah rejoins the cast as Princess (later Queen) Mary for the show's fourth and final season, to be filmed in Ireland this summer after her Leaving Cert exams are finished. The bed-hopping question was inappropriate on two levels. For one thing, the character of Princess Mary -- daughter of Maria Doyle Kennedy's Catherine of Aragon, history fans -- is pretty conservative. While Rhys-Meyers is frequently required to act with his breeches down, "thankfully, Princess Mary has never been involved in any incestuous relationships, or had her boobs hang out of her costume", says Sarah. When it comes to stripping off for 'artistic purposes', Sarah is adamant. "I wouldn't do nudity, I don't think," she says, before adding, "for a very long time". She has been forced to think carefully about the subject for some time now. "These scripts were coming up for me even two years ago that had stuff in them that would be just a little dodgy." The second problem with the question is that the interviewer evidently didn't research Bolger very closely before he asked it. Although she is no wide-eyed ingénue, she doesn't seem a likely candidate for the child-star-goes-off-the-rails hall of infamy. If anything, she's keen to stress her wholesome credentials. She doesn't drink alcohol and she went to a club once, but didn't like it. "I'm scared stiff that I'd be standing there with a glass in my hand and someone would take a picture of me, saying, 'Oh, there she goes'." She didn't go out to celebrate her recent milestone birthday because she was too busy preparing for an appearance on RTE's Seoige show. I'm starting to feel relatively debauched for accepting a strong coffee, which she brews up on the espresso machine she bought as a birthday present to herself. The sturdy, second-hand Volkswagen runaround sitting outside the front door of the family's large, pleasant house in Rathfarnham was her 18th birthday present from her parents. "I probably won't get near my money until I'm about 40," she laughs. As a learner, Sarah is forbidden to drive without a licensed driver in tow. Her parents want her to go to lunch with them when we have finished our interview, but Sarah wants to stay home and study. "They think I'll be straight out the door driving the car on my own as soon as they're gone," she says. If there is the tiniest hint of a pout, it's gone before it has a chance to dance on her lips. Unfailingly polite -- she tends to refer archaically to men as "gentlemen" -- I get the feeling that she's used to behaving herself in front of adults. As her mum Monica says: "She has lived a life in her years already. She's been doing this for ages, dealing with adults and taking meetings that would daunt anybody since she was small. She takes it all in her stride." She certainly knows how to handle herself. This is how she dealt with her creepy questioner in Berlin: "I said, 'Do you know what? I don't feel comfortable answering this question'." Next! Sarah is similarly composed about her upcoming Leaving Cert. Although she missed her mock exams because she was away for work, and has had to substitute attending school with on-set tutors from time to time, she is preparing to sit nine subjects in June. She lists them out: English -- her favourite -- Maths, Irish, Biology, Business studies, French, Classics and ... um ... what's the other one? Oh yes, Geography. "The Leaving Cert is an exam to help you in your future career, as is any acting job I've ever done," she explains. "I want to do well in it but I'm not counting on it. I'm probably going to defer any course for a year. I don't have any plans other than acting anyway." Monica and dad Derek are insistent that she puts the head down, as any concerned parents would be, but Sarah is justified in saying that she has put in the groundwork for a career in acting. Noted south Dublin drama teacher Ann Kavanagh first spotted Sarah as a four-year-old in her pre-school play and marked her as 'one to watch'. When she was just seven, she took a role in the TV movie A Love Divided (1999) alongside Orla Brady and Liam Cunningham. Her big break arrived in the shape of director Jim Sheridan and In America, which was released in 2002. She and sister Emma played on-screen sisters whose parents, played by Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine, are grieving the loss of their only son. Sarah went on to win the Phoenix Film Critics Award for best young actress for her sensitive turn as Christy -- but almost didn't get the part because Sheridan had originally envisaged the role for a 14-year-old (Sarah was 10 at the time of filming). My sister's in the car; I'll get her As Jim Sheridan once told the story, he had just informed Emma, then six, that she had been cast in the part of younger sister Ariel: "And she said, 'Oh good, my sister's in the car, I'll get her'. I said, 'No, Christy was written for a 14-year-old', but Sarah came in and that was it." In America launched the sisters on a whirlwind of publicity and awards ceremonies. In one surreal moment, Tom Cruise sang Happy Birthday to Sarah at the aftershow party at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2004. She continued to work steadily on home-produced dramas such as The Clinic, Stardust and Tara Road, but the past two years have seen her consolidate her position as a strong young presence in Hollywood. Stormbreaker in 2006 had her getting thrown off a building by Mickey Rourke -- a "gentleman" apparently -- and The Spiderwick Chronicles last year brought her further to the notice of the highly excitable, and highly desirable, teen market. Her interests in LA are being represented by respected Irish agent Hilda Queally, who also looks after Kate Winslet. Michael Symons of Hamilton Hodell, Sarah's agent in London, says: "Sarah is incredibly fortunate that she has reached that stage where she doesn't have to do all of those gruelling stages of open auditions. The Berlin award was really wonderful. People sit up and take notice of that as they only choose 10 a year from the whole of Europe. If you look back at who has won it in the past, they have gone on to have some very exciting careers." In that context, where you are a lauded young actress in demand, being trained in swordplay by the Canadian Olympic fencing coach (for Spiderwick), or being linked on the internet with your dishy young co-stars Freddie Highmore and Alex Pettyfer -- "One said I was pregnant!" -- no doubt, it's difficult to get starstruck. Sarah is very poised, and has clearly sat through many interviews. It's nice to see a touch of teenage dramatics breaking through when asked if she's ever been impressed by anyone. "Ewan McGregor!" she replies instantly, voice rising an octave. "He was only on-set [of Stormbreaker] for one day and I was there on that one day, thankfully. I was like, 'Oh my God, he's coming over here! He's coming over to me!'" When she comes home, though, she is Sarah Bolger again -- a schoolgirl at Loreto Beaufort in Rathfarnham who likes to hang out in Dundrum Town Centre with her pals and walk the family dogs. Her father, Derek, a friendly man who bounces down to the gate to usher me in out of the rain, owns an organic butcher's shop in Rialto. Is it true Sarah can be spotted giving a hand behind the counter? "I say I do sometimes," she smiles, "but really I'll drop him in lunch on a Saturday -- that's about the extent of it. I don't think I'm the butchering type." Neither, it seems, is sister Emma, who is now 14 and, after a break from acting for a few years, recently signed up with the Irish agent of Oscar-nominated Wexford youngster Saoirse Ronan. "I feel that if you leave for a while, you'll never get back into it," says Sarah. "But Emma's going to be one of those little bitches who leaves for three years and then lands a big film. She'll be great, though. She's so bubbly, 14 going on 50 and she's very loud -- if you don't see her, you'll hear her." The sisters have no other siblings. They squabble occasionally, says Monica, but they are very close. "Emma has decided loosely to get back into the acting," says mum, "but she's seen how Sarah has worked and she's not quite sure it's worth the sacrifice. They have their moments, but Emma has a calming effect on Sarah and she trusts her. If Emma says that something doesn't look good on Sarah, then Sarah won't wear it." The Bolger girls have obviously been given a grounded, supportive upbringing. When Sarah came back from travelling with the Spiderwick premiere to LA, New York, Sydney, London and Paris, it was straight back to school the next day. Monica travels with her eldest daughter on her frequent trips to meet producers and directors in LA. "My parents are protective of me, but you can't complain when they just want to look after you," says Sarah. In The Tudors last season, the script had her kiss a prince but "the gentleman [the actor] himself was 28", she says, "and my dad was like, 'He's what age?' My father doesn't normally go to the set, nor does my mother, but that day they both showed up!" Not that she's kept locked up in a tower like a medieval princess. She does have a boyfriend, of whom she says coyly, "He's not Irish", and she has plenty of friends in Rathfarnham. "I don't think I am famous enough -- or at all," she corrects herself, "for people wanting to be friends with me just because of that". But she does notice that some people make a point of not mentioning her 'other life'. "They will completely ignore the fact that you have acted and I can understand it. But I enjoy doing it -- so feck them all!" Friends with Saoirse Ronan This note of defiance gives a glimpse of a somewhat steelier core than you might expect. She may be only on the cusp of adulthood, but Sarah Bolger is a young woman with a plan to break Hollywood. "I feel like the past couple of years have been Colin, Cillian and Jonathan. The last Irish woman I can think of is Brenda Fricker. Irish women have to get up there and say: 'Move over, gentlemen!'" That's fighting talk, but it is true that Sarah and Atonement star Saoirse Ronan (15), from Wexford, are alone in the young Irish female contingent landing big-budget parts in the US. The pair became friends after meeting during a joint newspaper interview and at the IFTAs earlier this year, where they were both nominated for awards. "We have been texting ever since, cos we're both in the same position, you know? Her next character is a Polish girl and she was asking me about it the other day." King Henry VIII, who took the throne 500 years ago Tuesday, went on to transform Britain. He married six times and sent two of his queens to the executioner. His battle to divorce his first bride led him to break from the Roman Catholic church and establish the Church of England. He still divides opinion. "He was an awful person," said Brett Dolman, a curator at Hampton Court Palace, Henry's residence southwest of London. "Emotionally twisted, a bully." His colleague, Suzannah Lipscomb, is a bit more forgiving. "I wonder sometimes whether I am the first female sympathizer with this monstrous tyrant," said Lipscomb, who is overseeing anniversary exhibitions at Hampton Court and has written a book about Henry. "I'm not sure I like him, but I think I have a lot more insight into why he did what he did." Lipscomb said Henry's influence on Britain was huge. "He marked the transition from a medieval state to a modern state. He founded the Church of England. He swaggered out and claimed a place for England on the European stage that it has held ever since, despite its size." Henry is probably Britain's most famous monarch, instantly recognizable from Hans Holbein's portrait of a stout, bearded man in a black-and-white hat. Hampton Court, the sprawling red-brick Tudor palace that was a favored retreat for the king and his court, draws tourists by the busload to its grand state apartments, cavernous kitchens and 500-year-old tennis court, as well as its 60 acres (24 hectares) of riverside gardens and famous hedge maze. Knowledge of its former resident, however, tends to be limited to a few facts. "His wives and the creation of the Church of England," said Matt Cicinelli, 22, visiting from Washington, D.C. "Overall, just a monarch who did what he wanted to do." "I haven't heard entirely positive things about him, to be honest," said his friend, Tom Peterson. Britain's museums and palaces are using the anniversary to take a closer look at the man behind the image. Many have mounted special exhibitions to mark the occasion. Venues include Windsor Castle, one of the homes of the current monarch, Elizabeth II, and the place where Henry is buried alongside his third wife, Jane Seymour, who bore him a son. The British Library is showing off a large collection of Henry's books — many annotated by him — in an attempt to get inside the mind of the monarch. The National Archive is exhibiting original documents from Henry's reign, including a parchment roll recording his second wife Anne Boleyn's trial for high treason, with its lurid allegations of adultery and incest. There's also a major television series hosted by historian David Starkey, who calls Henry "our most important single ruler." Henry took the throne on April 21, 1509, as a svelte and athletic 17-year-old with a passion for jousting — not too far from the lithe, sexy figure portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers in Showtime's popular TV series "The Tudors." By the time he died in 1547, crippled by leg ulcers, his waist measured 55 inches (140 centimeters). The king's expanding girth can be charted in a Tower of London exhibition devoted to Henry's suits of armor. Bridget Clifford, who curated the Tower exhibition, said in the popular imagination Henry is "an elderly tyrant ... a large, rather overbearing figure, almost geometric, with triangular shoulders." The youthful armor is that of a popular warrior king eager to win the hearts and minds of his subjects — especially the women. Well educated, he spoke several languages and was a patron of the arts. But he also had political rivals, former friends and two of his wives — Boleyn and Catherine Howard — arrested, locked in the Tower of London and beheaded. "Clearly, at the beginning of his reign he was quite a catch — ebullient, charismatic, handsome," said Dolman, who has put together a touching exhibition at Hampton Court devoted to the women in Henry's life — his put-upon wives and his two daughters, Mary and Elizabeth. "He's a horrid person, but he is a passionate person and he loves — passionately loves — at least four of his wives." His passion for Anne Boleyn led him to seek divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon, who had failed to produce a male heir. The Vatican's refusal to annul the marriage led Henry to reject the authority of the pope and install himself as head of the Church of England. Under his successors, England became a resolutely Protestant nation. The schism and Henry's dissolution of the affluent monasteries shifted power in England from church to state. His wars ensured England was a major player in Europe, and the shipyards he founded helped produce a globe-girdling navy. Although he was obsessed with siring a future king, his only legitimate son, Edward VI, died at 15. His daughter, Elizabeth I, went on to rule for 45 years and oversaw one of England's greatest eras. Lipscomb said it's important to realize "how important he is to our sense of national identity." "Although we are horrified by him, we are proud of him as well," she said. "He symbolizes English identity. The key is in that stance, which is powerful and majestic." Even the king's famous bulk seems fitting to this calorie-loving nation. Organized by the Invisible Children organization, it's one of more than 100 such rallies planned in cities around the world to draw attention to the urgent problem. "I was first exposed to Invisible Children when I was doing 'Veronica Mars' through Ryan Hansen. He said, 'Hey, my best friend Jason Russell has done this documentary, and you should see it. I did, and I was so moved I immediately said, 'Whatever you need me to do, I will be available for,'" she explains. Extremely important to her is "letting young people know, 'You can change the world.'" As that remarkable film (which can be viewed at www.invisiblechildren.com) shows, USC Film School grad Russell and fellow twentysomething filmmakers Laren Poole and Bobby Bailey wound up immersed in the bloody 23-year Ugandan conflict, relentlessly working toward rescuing the child soldiers who begged for their help. He tells us, "Over the course of the war, there have been 30,000 children abducted … The reason it's so urgent now is that the rebel leader, Joseph Kony, has stepped up his activities, and since Christmas has murdered about 1,200 Congolese and abducted over 700 children." With enough pressure from the international community, he declares, "We want to stop this war." Bell is due to begin work on Disney's "You Again" comedy — in which she'll play a girl who finds out her brother is marrying the ex-classmate who made her life miserable in high school — in July, and has "When in Rome" due out in August. Then will come her recently completed "Couples Retreat" with Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman. However, she's thinking only of Invisible Children now. "Shooting a movie seems so pointless in comparison, but I recognize what gifts I've been given," she says. "Because of work, I have the platform to be able to speak and make a difference." IT'S ALL IN THE EXECUTION: "The Tudors'" James Frain, who portrays the infamous Thomas Cromwell, tells us that in the season currently unspooling, "I've got a lot more storytelling to do. Cromwell starts out as this really powerful guy and then ends up being humiliated." In real life, Cromwell lost face, then his head. Observes Frain: "It's kind of similar to the story that Anne Boleyn had last season but without the sex." He notes, "As a whole, they've achieved what they were going for in terms of the show definitely being darker. There's more at stake for the characters. There's also more power intrigue going on. It just gets better as the season goes on." Frain feels the same way about Jonathan Rhys Meyers. "With each season he seems to become more powerful and more confident in his role as king. He's done a really good job of creating that aura of fear and respect," says Frain of the actor in the role of Henry VIII. "These people thought that the king was close to God. He was supposed to be ordained by God," he points out. "Part of the reforms that Cromwell was pushing through were making Henry legally the head of the church, and answerable to no one. You've seen the human costs of that as far as what it does to someone to think of himself that way, and what it does to the people around him. We know in our own time that he's just a human being, but they didn't really have that understanding. I think Jonathan's performance gives a sense of the all inspiring, terrifying power that he had, but also what that did to him, and how it made him more and more isolated." TRAVELING LIGHT: Rocker Rick Springfield says that far from looking at his forthcoming summer concert date schedule as grueling, he sees it as invigorating. "I get a lot of energy from playing live. It's like a workout. I have the best band, too, and it's really fun to go out on the road," he says. "I know a lot of people who don't like it. We certainly get people looking at the way we tour — we go out for a couple of days and go home, a couple of days, go home." He can do that, he notes, because "We have a great show that doesn't rely on anything but the music. A lot of time, especially in the '80s, it was all about how big a show was and the effects, how many trucks it took to bring it all in. There are people who spend everything on the road now. But the way we go out works a lot better for us. There are people who've started to copy our approach to touring now." Annabelle Wallis: I was always really interested in that period of time ... so I knew of Jane Seymour, and luckily for me, she's the most beloved queen. She was a very amiable, good queen, a peacemaker... . And of course, she's far less obvious than someone like Anne Boleyn. I think there's an intelligence behind her lack of obviousness. In a way, she has more power that way, and if she had survived [giving] birth, she would have gone to become quite an incredible queen. She really had Henry's trust. And that's interesting in a time where his word is law. TVGuide.com: You play Seymour with a calm, even-keeled attitude, but she had knowledge of some of the dark maneuverings going on in Henry's court. How did you walk that line? Did you ever consider showing her crack a little bit? Wallis: To me, it came across as someone who was very composed, very secure... . She was Henry's rock, and she brought a lot of confidence back into the court. I wanted to make it clear that she's not a stupid woman, that she's not weak. She tests her boundaries, she pushes the envelope as much as she can, but you have to put her back in her place. In a way, it's almost protective of Henry, in that he stops her in a situation that may be not so beneficial for her, and oversteps her line. TVGuide.com: The Tudors is a sexy show, yet Jane occupies an almost virginal sphere. Why don't see her in many of those hot-and-heavy scenes? Wallis: After all the trauma and madness of Anne Boleyn, [Seymour] comes in and makes good — she's so beloved and protected, it's not conducive for her to be rolling around, vamping it up... . Sometimes with men, you're either a sexual object or you're the Mother Superior type, where you're protected. TVGuide.com: And yet, for all this adoration, Henry takes a lover — and it rolls off her back! Wallis: You have to remember that, at that time, men had mistresses, it was a done thing. It was something you expected when you went into a marriage, it's not like our day and age. So you have to rethink the whole societal code. TVGuide.com: What was the dynamic between you and Jonathan Rhys Meyers when the cameras weren't rolling? Wallis: We really got on. The whole cast was a good group of people. And Jonathan is wonderful, he has incredible energy and life — on camera and off. It's quite funny, because on the weekends [the cast is out together] and then on Monday ... you're sitting outside having a tea break, and you're in these silly costumes. TVGuide.com: Those large court scenes with dances are incredibly elaborate, costumes included. How much research did you have to do for those? Wallis: We had a choreographer, but if you notice, any scene with Jonathan and I is cut down. We were the worst. TVguide.com: You mean, when the two of you danced together? Wallis: [T]wo people dancing is so different than like when you dance [now]. It's very uptight. Also, when you've been working with people for so long, and you become good friends and then you try to dance. We were hysterically laughing all the time. We couldn't take it seriously, so they decided to cut us out. TVGuide.com: Where does your tragic ending leave things? It's the first time Henry's really seen in an empathetic light. Wallis: Historically, it all goes down hill after Jane. You do have a moment where he's a real human being — and then he turns back into the tyrant. TVGuide.com: Of course, for Tudors fans, there will be a changing of the guard with Henry's wives, when Cromwell brings in Anne of Cleves (played by Joss Stone). Did you have any interaction with Joss — like swapping wifely advice? Wallis: No, I didn't. I was leaving as she was arriving and every time I went back to do reshoots, she had [gone off].
