Âåëüâåò: Here's Johnny Fresh from living like a king on Californian golf courses, Jonathan Rhys Myers takes a royal swing at Irish newspapers and tells our LA correspondent Patricia Danaher why he is not amused by the pomp of awards events BARING HIS SOUL: Jonathan Rhys Myers gets to grips with the inner psyche of Henry VIII Jonathan Rhys Myers is very down on the Irish media for reporting his recent woes. After months of trying to speak to him, he finally shows up, early, for an interview with HQ. He is a bit moody and guarded at first. Dressed in a mustard-coloured leather jacket over a white shirt, he looks tanned and fit and tells me he has spent the past week on various California golf courses with his three brothers, two of whom are visiting him from Europe. He is still in a hiatus before beginning filming the final season of The Tudors at Ardmore, with time to brood over the past two years which have seen more in the media about his erratic behaviour and concerns for his well-being than his many professional accomplishments. Earlier this year, he failed to show up to collect two different awards for his work -- at the IFTA event in Dublin in February and at the Oscar Wilde event in Los Angeles. "I just felt I needed time off and I didn't need to go to awards ceremonies," he says, not altogether convincingly, sipping a large glass of orange juice in the garden of the Fours Seasons in Beverly Hills. "You can get slightly waylaid as an actor doing that sort of thing and I'm never that comfortable at them anyway. But you know what Irish newspapers are like, there are always going to be more aspects on your personal life than your professional life, because you're an Irish person so they tend to make up or embellish whichever story, trying to sell newspapers." He won't give me an example, so I invite him to talk about the photos of him falling down drunk on the street in LA that appeared on the night of the Golden Globes in January. "Someone said there were photos of me alright, so I went and looked on the internet and that photo was from six or seven months previously. If I'm not at something, they'll just print an old photo of me. I go out for a night once a year or something like that and it just ends up in the newspaper because you're a celebrity. It's very hard for the media with actors like me, because I don't date other actresses and I don't hang out with movie stars. "It's very hard to find stories about me, because I live an incredibly low-key life. People would like to think I'm a hell of a lot naughtier than I am. I am actually quite a boring guy. I spent the last week and a half playing bloody golf. Me, Jonathan Rhys Myers! If anyone saw me in those stupid golf clothes on the golf course, there would have been a different story written!" Actors are always being asked how like the character they are playing they are in their own lives. Henry VIII in The Tudors is not the first time Rhys Myers has played a king -- he also played a very charming very young Elvis in a CBS series four years ago, for which he was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe. "All actors are frustrated rock stars," he laughs and reminds me that his three brothers are all musicians who play in a band called Suzy's Field. "Elvis was not a great businessman but he was a great artist and he needed somebody like Colonel Parker to get him there. I don't think Elvis would have existed without Colonel Parker, he wouldn't have been anywhere near as famous. So you take the good with the bad. "Henry VIII had the same, first of all with Wolsey and then, after Cromwell, he learned his lesson and he decided to become the manipulator instead. I don't know why people blame a certain politician for what's wrong. You have to look at the advisers. You have to rely on the people that are counselling you very, very much, but that's the same in the whole business." And who counsels him? He won't name any names, except to say he just spent a few months in Middlesex staying with a counsellor, but denies vehemently that he was in rehab. "No, no, no. I was never in rehab. I spent that time in the English countryside with a good friend of mine who is a counsellor, but I wasn't in rehab," he tsk-tsks crossly. In spite of his private ups and downs in the past two years, including the break-up of a long engagement to Reena Hammer, and the sudden death of his mother, Geraldine, Rhys Myers' output has been prodigious and he has continued to make his mark, working consistently with the A-list, such as Woody Allen, Tom Cruise and Jessica Lange. He is animated when it comes to talking about work, but becomes visibly guarded when the interview veers towards anything personal, crossing his arms across his chest and tilting his body away from me. "People say that the film industry is a very competitive industry, but I don't see my enemy," he laughs. "It's not like a tennis match and I've got a guy on the other side of the court. You've just got to be the best actor that you can possibly be. I'm 31 now and I believe everything I've done has been an apprenticeship so far. "It's like the first phase, when I was allowed to play roles that were extraordinary, play roles that were risqué, and make mistakes, have successes, have failures, all of these by the time I was 31. Thirty-six films and three TV series -- that's the apprenticeship. What I do from 31 to 50 is probably my career, so I haven't even started yet." Âåëüâåò: Everyday I come home from class to have a quick lunch at home. As I sit down to relax and enjoy my meal, I can’t help but wish there was something better to watch on TV. Between overly dramatic soap operas, Maury and Jerry Springer trying to figure out if a guy named Reggie is some baby’s father, and re-runs on VH1, afternoon TV is nothing but garbage. However, on one of my tireless lunch breaks channel surfing, I stumbled upon the “Martha Stewart Show”. While this show is usually directed towards middle-aged housewives who enjoy gardening, cooking and crafts, her unexpected guest stars make this show surprisingly entertaining for everyone. Even though she is genuinely offering great advice and tips to stay-at-home moms, she knowingly pokes fun at some well-known celebrities and they join in by teasing her as well. I mean where else can you see Ludacris show how he prepares sea bass, while Martha chats about how much she loves his music. Is she listening to the same “Luda” I do? I mean I can’t really picture her singing; “I’ve got h--- in different area codes,” while weaving baskets, but there’s a lot we don’t know about her. On her recent show with SNL’s Seth Meyers, who was a last minute replacement for Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Martha prepared Easter favorite hot crossed buns, agreeing it would be an appropriate nickname for “Tudors” hottie Jonathan because of his lovely buns. Between this and her supposed “thing” with Anthony Hopkins revealed in her interview with Ray Liotta earlier this month, when the actor asked her if Hopkins was a good kisser, it’s evident the blushing host is not as innocent as we always thought. So whether she is coyly making a Q-tip holder with Q-Tip the rapper, or being reminded of her stint in the big house while decorating Easter eggs with Rosie O’Donnell, the “Martha Stewart Show” is a surprisingly funny afternoon talk show that pokes fun at celebrities including herself while teaching valuable tips on being a good housekeeper. I have finally found a show that is worth watching during my lunch break everyday, and as the domestic diva herself would say, “That’s a good thing.” http://www.northernstar.info/article/7480/

Âåëüâåò: Wild? I prefer to play golf -- Rhys Meyers Rumours: I never went to rehab, says Tudors heartthrob Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers loves going on the course (Photo by Jason Merritt/Getty Images) Hollywood superstar Jonathan Rhys Meyers has insisted that his bad boy image is way off the mark. The star claimed that far from partying and drinking he actually prefers low-key pursuits such as golf. In an exclusive interview with the Herald, the Irish actor admitted that he has spent some time in Middlesex staying with a counsellor but denies that he was in rehab. Reports have said that Jonathan has taken the title of Irish wild child in LA from Colin Farrell and has had a public battle with alcohol addiction. But the Corkman has claimed that the reality is far removed from this Hollywood lifestyle. "I live an incredibly low key life. I think people would like to think I'm a hell of a lot naughtier than I am actually," he said. "I am actually quite a boring guy. I spent the last week and a half playing bloody golf. Me, Jonathan Rhys Meyers! If anyone saw me in those stupid golf clothes on the golf course, there would have been a different story written!" he laughed. The actor has had a difficult time over the past two years, including the break up of a long engagement to Reena Hammer and the sudden death of his mother, Geraldine. The 31-year-old failed to show up to collect two different awards for his work -- at the IFTA event in Dublin and at the Oscar Wilde event in Los Angeles -- as well as pulling out of appearances on late night chat shows in the US. But he insisted the no-shows were not a sign that he was going off the rails. "I just felt I needed time off and I didn't need to go to awards ceremonies," Jonathan explained. "You can get slightly waylaid as an actor doing that sort of thing and I'm never that comfortable at them anyway." Jonathan, who is famed for his role as Henry VIII in The Tudors as well as starring in a range of blockbusters, including Match Point and Mission Impossible III, said that "all actors are frustrated rock stars". But he denied that he has any difficulty pursuing a career in the intense show business. "People say that the film industry is a very competitive industry, but I don't see my enemy," he laughs. "I think as an actor, you've just got to be the best actor that you can possibly be, keep yourself as focused as possible and be open." "I'm 31 years old now and I really, honestly I believe everything I've done has been an apprenticeship so far," he added. "What I do from 31 to 50 is probably my career so I haven't even started yet," he said. http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/wild-i-prefer-to-play-golf--rhys-meyers-1722811.html

Âåëüâåò: LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be relieved to see “The Tudors” end before his character, King Henry VIII, transforms from a robust young man to pudgy old ruler. “I wouldn't be very good at putting on a lot of weight. When I played Elvis (a young Presley, in the 2005 TV movie “Elvis”), I really had to struggle so I would have Elvis' puppy fat,” Meyers said. “I had to keep eating.” Meyers' portrayal of an energetically trim Henry is in sharp contrast to portraits depicting a mature, full-faced monarch, one with an apparent appetite for food as well as marriage. “The Tudors” is in its third season on Showtime. It has unfolded as a flashy chronicle of the early and middle years of Henry's political and domestic life, which included an infamous six wives and the beheading of two. Henry's health has been hobbled as the series progressed, but the cause is a leg injury and not weight. “It doesn't seem to have affected his sexual prowess,” Meyers observed. “Of course, Henry wasn't as sexed up as the show is. But we're not selling it to a 16th-century audience.” Meyers has two scripts in hand for the fourth and final season, scheduled to begin production in June, and has yet to discover how the tale will end. “If I was going to make a suggestion, just go to a certain point and then you have a placard saying, ‘Henry continued to rule and died in the year 1547,'” he said. The Dublin-born actor has relished playing the colorful king, whom he views as an “arrogant, selfish man” who was driven to folly because of his romantic obsessions and determined pursuit of a male heir. The current season includes third wife Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), the woman who was “probably the great love of his life,” Meyers said, and less-cherished wife No. 4, Anne of Cleves, played by pop star Joss Stone. Meyers has the intense, pouty-lipped look that makes him a natural for bedroom scenes. But the episode he singles out involves a grief-stricken Henry and the court “fool,” whom Meyers describes as the only man in England who can speak truth to power. He's played by David Bradley, “a wonderful actor,” Meyers said. The episode, the season's fifth, debuts Sunday. “We get plastered drunk … and I've never done that before, never had to act drunk. It's quite difficult to get it right,” he said. So that encounter trumps filming Henry's flings with a succession of lovely women? “Doing the erotic stuff, it is what it is,” Meyers said. “But it's not really where you get the best of your acting. I have a girlfriend, these girls have boyfriends. So where's the respectful line in doing a sex scene if you really want to do a good one?” He recalled being asked by the director in the first season to touch an actress' breast, and being cautioned by her that she had a boyfriend. “Not anymore,” a cheeky Meyers replied http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090501/LIVING/905010306

The auction will benefit various charities, including The Prince's Trust, a nonprofit founded by Prince Charles that provides practical and financial support to struggling youth in the United Kingdom. Hollywood's awards season nominees and presenters make up the participants of this year's event, and they were asked to showcase their creativity by designing their own jewelry to wear on the red carpet, pieces that would later be offered at the auction. According to Bonhams, celebrities who have signed or designed items include Amy Adams, Danny Boyle and the cast of Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Carell, Kelly Clarkson, Colin Farrell, Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais, Brendan Gleeson, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, The Jonas Brothers, Keira Knightley, Hugh Laurie, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Brad Pitt, Mickey Rourke, Steven Spielberg, Tom Wilkinson, Kate Winslet and Reese Witherspoon, among others. Jewelry designer Robyn Rhodes worked with the celebrities and oversaw the manufacturing of the one-of-a-kind pieces. In addition to jewelry, signed Hollywood memorabilia, footwear and handbags will also be up for auction. Gala preview events will take place in New York, London and Los Angeles before a May 28 live auction in the latter city. And given that the jewelry up for auction in the event has had a red-carpet history, the jewelry will also have some red-carpet transport for its tour. The items will travel on the Cunard Line's flagship Queen Mary 2 aboard a six-day transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton, England. The collection will be previewed in an exhibit at Bonhams in London on May 5, followed by the New York exhibition on May 18. "We anticipate an international audience will express interest in the jewelry, footwear, handbags and Hollywood memorabilia," Bonhams and Butterfields Director of Sunset Estate Auctions Carolyn Mani said in a media release. "Bidding could be quite competitive for these one-of-kind items. Âåëüâåò: Powered by WP Greet Box After the tour de force from President Obama, it didn’t seem like the night could be any more magical. But as guests walked up the circular drive for the Bloomberg | Vanity Fair after party at the French Ambassador’s residence, the magic continued. It was the ultimate insiders affair: no red carpet or paparazzi gauntlet, just Owen Wilson lounging near the front door talking quietly to a few Washington admirers. With Donald Rumsfeld, who lives down the street, stopping by for a drink, it was a night, a location, and a crowd where anything could happen. Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter, joining party forces this year, welcomed the exclusive guests. The brave captain of the Maresk Alabama, who offered his life in exchange for his mates, was Bloomberg’s special guest for the weekend. That followed getting the keys to New York City from Mayor Bloomberg the day before. Captain Richard Phillips shrugged off the compliments of celebrities (Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore) and politicos who lined up to shake his hand, but he did pose proudly with another real-life Captain America, Chesley Sullenberger, who safely piloted a US Airways jet onto the Hudson River. Earlier in the day, Phillips and his wife, Andrea, met with President Obama in the Oval Office, after a private tour of the White House. The unflappable captain told Bloomberg it was an “honor to meet the President. He’s a very amazing man and he’s a very down-to-earth man.” His wife agreed, “It was very overwhelming, surreal to actually, be inside the Oval Office … I was so deeply excited to have met the President like that.” After being introduced to the Commander-in-chief, Phillips admitted it was hard to get excited about meeting anyone else after being introduced to the Commander-in-Chief. The dinner that kicked the evening off, the White House Correspondents Dinner, recognizes the stars of the White House press corps, many of whom shined brightly at the Bloomberg | Vanity Fair party afterwards. At one end of the party media veterans – Barbara Walters, Margaret Carlson, Jon Meacham, Jim Bell, Andrea Mitchell, Bill Plante, John McLaughlin, and Al Hunt — rubbed elbows with the new kids on the media block – Katherine Weymouth, Chuck Todd, Savannah Guthrie, Jake Tapper, Lara Logan, Michael Calderone, Betsy Fischer, Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei. And the stars from Hollywood mingled with the brightest lights from stage and screen: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Natalie Portman, Claire Danes, Christian Slater, Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Amy Poehler and Will Arnett, Chace Crawford, Ali Wentworth, Kerry Washington and Denis Leary. Celluloid royalty Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be found in one room, real royalty, His Highness Prince Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein in another, and a Supreme, Justice Antonin Scalia, in yet another. And real rock stars, like Sting and Jon Bon Jovi, mingled with Obama rock stars: Valerie Jarrett, David and Susan Axelrod, David Plouffe and his wife Olivia Morgan, Peter Orszag, Dan Pfeiffer and Sarah Feinberg and cabinet members Shaun Donovan, Steven Chu, Hilda Solis, and Lisa Jackson. Also at the party, Team Obama’s pit crew led by Tommy Vietor and Katie McCormick Lelyvold, Reid Cherlin, Marissa “Ground Zero” Hopkins, Sally Armbruster, Amanda Anderson, Kate Kochman, Katie Johnson and the cool and collected Eric Lesser. Jon Favreau standing next to Graydon Carter looked like he belonged at all Vanity Fair parties. Team Fav favorites Sarah Hurwitz, Cody Keenan, and Jon Lovett who helped pen the President’s dinner remarks, were like the President they serve, modest in their success. The Emanuel family represented multiple spheres of influence: White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel (the butt of one of Obama’s better jokes) his National Institutes of Health bioethicist brother Zeke, and Ari, a Hollywood agent depicted in “Entourage,” who left early to get his son Noah home for Mother’s Day. What was unusual about the party was its low-key, matter-of-fact quality. There was no push to meet and greet the biggest bold-faced name, no jostling for position near the celebrities, no rubbernecking fans. As the party wound down, it was just a group of friends, old and new, enjoying the conversation, the trees lit by red, white and blue lights, and the soft warm May breeze. http://www.whitehousecorrespondentsweekendinsider.com/2009/05/12/inside-the-2009-bloomberg-vanity-fair-after-party/

Plus, the dude played Elvis Presley in Elvis and a David Bowie–like rocker in Velvet Goldmine so you know he can act like a singer. Sign us up! Why he won’t be: As good a choice as he is, we have a feeling Mr. Scorsese will want to save Mr. Rhys Meyers for his Mick Jagger biopic. Âåëüâåò: Scorsese doing Sinatra: Is this a good idea? News broke today that iconic director Martin Scorsese has signed on to direct a biopic of Frank Sinatra. On the surface, this seems like a natural fit. Scorsese has deep roots in Italian-American culture (Goodfellas), mid-20th century Americana (The Aviator), and has built successful films around charismatic, complicated male characters (Raging Bull, Casino). The problem, though, is that most of Scorsese's best work is raw, kinetic, and contemporary. Think Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Mean Streets, The Departed -- even Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. The content of these films matches Scorsese's restless personal energy and roaming-camera shooting style. When he gets into period movies lately the result is -- I'll just say it: ponderous. Aviator and Gangs of New York both felt so freighted by the crushing weight of their historical precision that the films seemed suffocated. I'm also not heartened by the news, from one of the film's producers, that Leonardo DiCaprio is at the front of the line to play Old Blue Eyes. There's no doubt he's a fine actor, and probably a cool casting choice, but the Sinatra film would become the fifth movie Scorsese and DiCaprio make together. (Their fourth, a 1954 thriller called Shutter Island, comes out this fall.) I think it may be time for both men to see other people. And for Scorsese to make a modern film again before he gets so mired in the amber of some idealized 1950s America that he never gets around to helping us make sense of our own crazy 21st century. But what do you think, Popwatchers? Am I being too harsh on Marty, or is it time for him to give the period movies a rest? http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/05/scorsese-doing.html

Âåëüâåò: The Night Variety Here's my story for on the dinner for the print edition of Variety: The arrival of President Obama's administration undoubtedly injected a new sense of energy into this year's White House Correspondent's Assn. dinner, transforming an event labeled the "nerd prom" into something more akin to the Golden Globes. In the claustrophobic atmosphere of the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, the sound of a protester shouting down Donald Rumsfeld was drowned out by the piercing screams of teenage fans as they watched for the likes of Natalie Portman, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore and cast members from "Gossip Girl" to arrive. The surreal D.C.-Hollywood-media mix is an annual ritual, but it was as if everything was in alignment this year. With names like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Alicia Keys, Sting, Jon Bon Jovi and Warren Buffett, even former Secretary of State Colin Powell remarked on the presence of so many good "gets," in his words. At a string of pre-parties sponsored by media outlets, attendees and photographers clamored for a look at the latest VIP, although it was hard to get tell if its was for the Hollywood figure or a cabinet member or someone like Richard Phillips, the captain of the ship seized by Somali pirates. What hasn't changed, however, is the nature of the annual event itself. The President still delivered one-liners fit for Jay Leno. The dinner entertainment, Wanda Sykes, still inspired the after-event consternation as to whether she went too far. The New York Times still boycotted, on the grounds that the cavorting of White House press corps with the administration they cover is a bit too unprofessional. And as is always the case, the fete puts deep-thinking policy makers into ball gowns and tuxes, and just about everyone scrambling to see and be seen with anyone who can incite a flash bulb. "It is one of the most self indulgent evenings of the year," Powell, who has two children in entertainment, told Variety. By most accounts, Obama passed this first major test of presidential humor with flying colors. "Most of you covered me," he said to the journos. "All of you voted for me. Apologies to the Fox table." Then came the quip that got the greatest laugh, at the expense of chief of staff Rahm Emanuel: "Tomorrow is Mother's Day. This is a tough holiday for Rahm. He's not used to saying the word 'day' after 'mother.'" More questionable --- if only because D.C. isn't quite used to her sharp tongue --- was after-dinner entertainer Wanda Sykes, who toned down her language but didn't spare much when it came to Rush Limbaugh. "He just wants the country to fail. To me, that's treason. He's not saying anything different than what Osama bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker. But he was just so strung out on OxyContin he missed his flight." Another joke elicited some soft groans: "Governor Palin is not here. She pulled out at the last minute. Someone should tell her: That is not how you practice abstinence." Palin's husband, Todd, was at the Fox table. Afterward, White House senior adviser David Axelrod called Sykes "very entertaining." "She walked it to the line, but I thought she pulled it back," he said. Conservative commentators grumbled, and Bill O'Reilly darted off refusing to give his take. Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele was more restrained. "Wanda Sykes is Wanda Sykes," he said, before warning, "I think Rush will have a few things to say in the coming days." The event drew no where near the GOPers of the Bush years --- one attendee called last year's event "glum" --- but figures like Newt Gingrich mingled at the pre-dinner parties. A beaming Rumsfeld seemed unfazed as he entered to the woman's shouts of "War criminal! Arrest this man!" right in his face. Asked about it by Variety, he threw his hands up in the air and said, "They are out front demonstrating about animals... It is life in America." But as much as the superficial trumped seriousness, there were unmistakable signs that the governing class isn't going to be consumed by the glitter. At a party at the Corcoran Gallery of Art hosted by Capitol File, Emanuel kept his distance from the red carpet. There's also the case of an official from the Naval Heritage Museum, who watched as her workplace was taken over by a smattering of celebrities and politicos for a Creative Coalition/Capitol File screening of Barry Levinson's new doc, "PoliWood," on Friday. Shaking her head at a rope line, she said, "Too self important for me," and left. As fascinated as they may be with each other, these are two worlds that just don't entirely equate. At a pre-dinner brunch at the home of media entrepreneur Tammy Haddad, Val Kilmer told her he was "probably not" going to run for governor of New Mexico, as he had been considering, according to Politico. Soon after that, he walked into the party, spotted Christian Slater, and rushed over to hug him, saying, "There's one of my kind." http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/latestnews/index.php?id=13893

Âåëüâåò: Movie star Colin Farrell has been voted one of the world's top sex symbols -- for gay men. The renowned woman-iser, who said he hated his one on-screen kiss with a man, has now taken his place among the world's gay icons. Farrell was in good company in the hot 100 listing, compiled by popular gay and bisexual website AfterElton. Heart The list included Barack Obama -- and fellow Irishman Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Dubliner Farrell was number 66 in the poll, with Rhys Meyers well ahead at 44th. The Cork-born Tudors' star polled ahead of Clive Owen, Jude Law and Orlando Bloom. They can both take heart in polling well ahead of stars such as George Clooney, who lagged behind at number 73. Farrell is currently dating Polish singer and actress Alicja Bachleda, his co-star in the forthcoming movie Ondine. Although the top 100 was dominated by straight men, nearly 20pc were gay, including those in the top three. Actor Neil Patrick Harris, of Starship Troopers, was number one, followed by Torchwood star John Barrowman and Brothers and Sisters' actor Luke MacFarlane. Last year's poll-topper Jake Gyllenhal dropped to fourth, with X-Men's Wolverine Hugh Jackman in eighth. http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/womanising-movie-hunk-colin-outed-as-a-gay-icon-1742942.html

Âåëüâåò: The tropical north is a great place for fashion designers to find their mojo. Some say there’s something in the water, others say it’s the tropical humidity. Whatever the reason, Far North Queensland is well known as being a breeding ground for innovative fashion designers. Names such as Lana Michalenko, Linda Jackson, Vikki Hatton, Grace Lee, Vanessa Goggan, Jillian Zamora, Karlie-Jay, Vivienne Francine and Ailsa Rollo immediately spring to mind. Then there’s Stacey Cotter, who we haven’t heard much of for a little while, but who is living the dream. Now 25, Stacey, originally from Mareeba, is the design manager at Timothy Everest in London. The brand has been labelled "the leader of the new bespoke movement" and his designs have been worn by David Beckham, Pierce Brosnan, James McAvoy, Jay-Z, Colin Firth and the Kaiser Chiefs, to name a few. After her studies at Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE in Cairns, Stacey moved to Brisbane to further her studies. At her graduate show, Stacey was awarded the 2005 Italian Scholarship to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Polimoda Campus in Florence, Italy where she completed the International Fashion Design Program. After graduating from Polimoda, Stacey moved to Paris for a few months and was offered a job with European fashion company Miro Radici in London as the menswear designer and shortly afterwards was approached by Timothy Everest. With his quirky and quintessentially English take on menswear, Marks and Spencer called Timothy Everest "the UK’s number one suit designer … whose work is the definition of modern, premium tailoring". "My role includes overseeing the research of current and predicted future fashion trends, sourcing seasonal inspiration in order to create a mood/theme for the season, designing the collections, preparing design presentations for our collaboration projects, licensees or for manufacturing, liasing with collaborating partners, Marks and Spencer, or our licensees in Japan regarding the collections and overseeing press requests," Stacey says. She has travelled to Florence, Milan, Germany and Paris for her job and also commutes between London and Paris with her partner each month. "Working in luxury fashion I do get the opportunity to attend lots of fun and interesting functions. Last year I attended a fashion show and cocktail party where Claudia Schiffer, Pixie Geldof and Erin O’Connor were special guests. At the MAC makeup party, Dita Von Teese rode a giant mechanical lipstick," she says. "Last week I stepped outside my place to see Vivienne Westwood being filmed on the corner of my street. Ten years ago as a teenager on the Tablelands I never would have imagined the life I am currently living. "Yes, sometimes I do pinch myself when I realise where my career in fashion has taken me. I am on the journey I dreamed of." As for the future, she hopes to someday have her own as a successful fashion entrepreneur. "The thing I noticed most when I first came to Europe and what set my style apart was that I wasn’t afraid of colour. I wear bright vibrant shades and colourful patterns whether in summer or winter – a style trait I credit to living in the tropics. I guess this stems from the fact our seasons are less obvious in FNQ then in Europe so we tend to transcend seasons. "Here there is more of an unwritten rule about what colours you should wear in winter and although many European designers include bright colours in their AW collections, it is not very evident in the sea of black in the streets. Maybe dark autumnal shades do trick you into feeling warmer but vibrant colours have a huge impact on your mood especially in cold drizzly weather." And many of latest bunch studying at TAFE Cairns want to follow in Stacey. Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE’s fashion courses are well regarded as having produced top names and giving students skills that can take them to the top of their game. Teacher Yvonne Turnbull says just 20 students a year are chosen to undertake the Certificate IV fashion course, but the number of success stories is astounding. It is one of only four TAFE colleges in the state to offer studies in fashion and she says it gives students good skill foundations and an insight into what the industry entails. Students focus on design, pattern-making, sewing and marketing. Yvonne says the talent in this year’s course is astounding and it was tough to pick out individuals to highlight for this update on young fashionistas. Evie Schillmoller, 18, says the main reason she is studying fashion design is because of her own body shape. Tall with a large bust and narrow back, she says she finds it hard to find clothes to fit. Evie says she learnt to hand sew with her mother and grandmother but is learning new skills courtesy of her studies. She describes her current style as "alternative wear" and she likes using recycled materials because she is environmentally conscious. Ultimately she says she would like to have her own boutique. Madison Achilles’ career path probably was fore-ordained as her mother also has undertaken the course and is a dressmaker. "I’ve always been into fashion and making my own clothes and I’ve been making jewellery for a few years now," Madison, 21, says. Her own taste leans towards lace-ups, corsets and anything well fitted. She took a year off from studying after finishing school, saying she didn’t want to jump into more study straight away. Madison enjoys jewellery design as she says it is more personal. She also says having her mother’s influence is handy, though their styles are vastly different. Madison says her mother’s style is classy and elegant, while her personal style is gothic, funk-rocker. Leah Gardiner, 25, yearns for women to dress in a more lady-like style. Her personal taste leans towards the 1920’s era of fashion. "I just like the whole lady-like thing, pretty hairstyles, low-waisted belts. I don’t think it’s really been re-done and it should be," Leah says. "I was really close to my grandma when I was little and she just taught me that way." Leah says she has always been interested in fashion and has undertaken several design courses in the past few years. Ultimately she aims to own her own business. Grace An says she fell in love with the world of fashion when she inherited a sewing machine from her sister at the age of 14. Her studies are being funded by a $3000 fashion scholarship. She says her style is ethereal, girlie, soft and with plenty of pastel colours. "I was never really a smart student in class, but I was always arty," the 18-year-old says. Her mother did any family sewing by hand as the family did not own a machine but in year nine at Cairns State High School Grace started putting clothes together for the school’s acclaimed CAD fashion parade. After completing this TAFE course, Grace hopes to move to Brisbane or Melbourne to further her studies and ultimately have her own label. http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2009/05/20/43195_lifestyle.html

Âåëüâåò: If you’re standing on a Hollywood film set playing opposite Jack Black, you might be tempted to conclude you’ve made it as an actor. But not Chris O’Dowd. The 29-year-old from Boyle, Co. Roscommon has an Irishman’s caution about counting his chickens. “I’ve seen so many actors on top of the world fall off a week or two later,” he tells the Irish Voice. “It’s a practical thing. I think you’re only as good as your next project so I won’t be patting myself on the back just yet, you know?” But he has every right to be pleased with himself, nonetheless. O’Dowd recently won the role of Edward Edwardian, the English-sounding military leader of the Lilliputians in the film version of Gulliver’s Travels. The film, a knock-about comedy on an epic scale, is currently being shot in London. O’Dowd plays Black’s main rival and arch nemesis. In a bit of casting that Jonathan Swift might have appreciated, it’s the Irishman who’s the villain of the piece. “In Gulliver’s Travels I play the military commander of the Lilliputians (the nation of six inch people that Gulliver towers over). He’s a comedy baddy engaged to a princess (played by Emily Blunt) and he tries to kill Gulliver (played by Black). A lot of mayhem ensues.” O’Dowd admits he’s completely wowed by the epic scale of the big-budget Hollywood film. “It’s a very big set and it’s filled with a very fun group of people. But there’s also a lot of freedom in it creatively and I’m having huge fun making it. Being this sort of posh prancing English style of commander barking orders and running around is about as much fun as you’d imagine,” he says. Part of O’Dowd’s appeal is his unlikely sex symbol status. Although there’s no doubt that O’Dowd is very good looking, he’s still very approachable, and not at all the kind of humorless alpha male Irish actor type more commonly plastered all over a Hugo Boss commercial, say. There’s even an online group now, the O’Dowdles, who spend all their free time enumerating his charms. Asked if he thinks he’ll become the next Colin Farrell or Jonathan Rhys Meyers he sighs and says, “I will need sharper cheekbones.” http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Life-in-the-fast-lane-with-Chris-ODowd-45694242.html?page=2

Âåëüâåò: Äåñÿòêà ñàìûõ ñåêñóàëüíûõ èðëàíäöåâ 10. Colin Farrell. This Irish bad boy is notorious for his off-screen behavior. Farrell is extremely popular internationally (most notably in America). Farrell has worked with names such as Salma Hayek, Oliver Stone, Steven Spielberg, Al Pacino, Ben Affleck, Cate Blanchett, and more. Farrell is also a director. 9. Cillian Murphy. Murphy is one of those faces--"That's that guy!" He is highly recognizable, but few put the face with the name. Murphy frequently chooses independent films over big-budget masterpieces. His more popular and influential performances include The Wind That Shakes the Barley (a must for anyone interested in Irish history), Girl With a Pearl Earring, and 28 Days Later. Read more at The CillianSite. 8. Aidan Quinn. Born in the United States, Quinn was raised primarily in Ireland. This wide-eyed actor has been seen in popular movies such as Legends of the Fall and Michael Collins, but remains a personal favorite to many due to his work in controversial and independent projects such as The Book of Daniel and Songcatcher. IMDb reports that Quinn is also a friend of legendary singer-songwriter Paul McCartney. 7. Colm Meaney. Meaney has served as a stock Irish character in multiple films. His more popular roles include a long-time portrayal of Chief O'Brien on multiple Star Trek series and ward boss Kelly in Far and Away. Meaney is notable for his constant transition between television and film, making this Dublin native one of the most prolific actors to ever come out of Ireland. 6. Bono. U2's front man has been at the head of charitable works. His popularity is indisputable, despite the fact that almost as many people seem to dislike him. Known for his sexy shades and rock star cool, Bono's upbringing (having both an Anglican and Irish Catholic parent) has been a hot topic, frequently and openly discussed by the celebrity. Bono also claims that his trademark shades are not just there to complement his golden voice: his eyes are very light-sensitive. 5. Pierce Brosnan. Born in County Meath, Ireland, Pierce Brosnan is truly Irish and American, holding dual citizenship. Brosnan is officially sealed as 'sexy' due to his portrayal of James Bond in some of the Bond films. Fans also laud his bathing suit appearance in Mrs. Doubtfire, though recently many have expressed dislike over his acting (and vocal attempt) in Mamma Mia. 4. Stuart Townsend. Not just anyone could play a character by the name of Dorian Gray, and this actor fit the bill for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen portrayal. Townsend earns automatic cool points for his part in Robot Chicken. Though this hottie tends to stick to low-key roles, he was reportedly the original pick to play Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. 3. Kenneth Branagh. A classic favorite, Branagh was raised in a Protestant family in Belfast. To avoid being affected by sectarian violence, his family relocated to England, where Branagh adopted an English accent to avoid taunting or worse from classmates. Despite the potential difficulties, Branagh culturally identifies himself as Irish and is outspoken about the issue. Deemed a master of Shakespearean acting, Branagh has played in many Shakespearean film adaptations including Othello, Hamlet, and Henry V. 2. Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Deemed 'Dublin's finest,' Jonathan Rhys Meyers is extremely famous for his role as King Henry VIII in The Tudors. Meyers is a master of publicity, using his charming smile to secure his position as an international sex symbol and superstar. More than just a pretty face, this Golden Globe winner's filmography boasts everything from pop culture to Shakespeare. 1. Liam Neeson. Named after his family's priest, Liam Neeson has portrayed many poignant and pivotal roles in film. He is said to be particularly desirable when wearing a kilt in Rob Roy, and seems to favor a message of independence as well in his lead role portrayal in Michael Collins. His most discussed and critically-acclaimed portrayal, however, is that of Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List. Neeson seems to go out of his way to pick ethically and politically-charged roles, including the voice of Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia. Additionally, Neeson seemed born to play the mentoring role of Qui'Gon Jinn in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Aging with grace, this distinguished Irish actor still has all the right moves (and weapons proficiencies) in the recent action flick Taken. Neeson's boyish gaze combined with his strong features and rebellious roles certainly make him worth of the title of hottest male Irish celebrity. http://www.examiner.com/x-1458-Philadelphia-Irish-American-Community-Examiner~y2009m6d9-Hottest-Irish-actors

Âåëüâåò: If Tom Cruise Doesn’t Headline ‘Mission: Impossible IV,’ Then Who Should Take His Place? Published by Josh Wigler on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 12:00 pm. Tom CruiseLike MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg, I too am a fan of “Mission: Impossible III,” and I’m happy to hear that series star Tom Cruise and “III” director J.J. Abrams will reunite for a fourth outing with Ethan Hunt and the IMF gang. What really catches my interest is the latest news from The Hollywood Reporter, which confirms TV Guide’s earlier scoop of Abrams and Cruise’s return to the franchise. It’s not the confirmation that has my spider-sense tingling but the insinuation that Cruise might no longer be the face of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Citing an unnamed executive source, the THR story mentions that he might hand the reigns over to a younger actor, or even to an ensemble. It’s hard to imagine that Tom Cruise would step into the producer role and leave his acting shoes back home. It certainly is not out of the realm of possibility that the actor, now 46, could ask for a minimized role in the “Impossible” series. Could Ethan Hunt be heading for a desk job — as he had tried to do in the third film — leaving the door open for a new agent to take his place on the field? For the moment, let’s imagine that Cruise is indeed passing the torch. Who would be best suited to replace him? Surely, a Ving Rhames-headlining “Mission: Impossible IV” seems out of the question in attracting a mainstream audience. He’s great, but he’s not exactly one of Hollywood’s go-to leading men. I would certainly see a midnight showing of a Rhames-led “M:I” movie, no question! But are there other characters from the series that could take the lead? It’s easy to forget that Jonathan Rhys Meyers had a bit role to play in “M:I III” as Declan Gormley, a member of the newly assembled IMF squad. The actor’s star is on the rise thanks to his celebrated performance as Henry VIII on “The Tudors,” a Showtime series that chronicles the history of Henry’s rule over England. Meyers is only 32 years old and he has pre-established history within the “Impossible” franchise. Those factors, along with the cheaper paycheck he would draw as compared to an actor of Tom Cruise’s caliber, mean you could have the perfect and in many ways ready-made replacement for Ethan Hunt. Still, I wonder if elevating Declan’s character would feel forced, and if it’s best to just keep him as part of the ensemble. In either case, that’s one thing I hope remains consistent between “III” and “IV” — say what you will about Cruise, but there’s no denying Abrams’ ability to manage an ensemble. He did it perfectly during his tenure on “Alias” and “Lost,” then proved himself again with both “M:I III” and “Star Trek.” Maybe the best route then would be to keep Meyers and the rest of the last movie’s ensemble — including Simon Pegg, Laurence Fishburne and the aforementioned Rhames — in place. In that scenario, would the film be better served as a pure ensemble piece or as a star vehicle for a newcomer? There are plenty of rising stars in Hollywood that could take over Cruise’s leading man status. Abrams has a knack for pulling young actors up by their bootstraps and shooting them to stardom — just look at Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth. There are several other actors on the small screen that he could give a similar boost to, such as “Lost”’s Josh Holloway, “True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgård and former “Alias” actor-turned “Heroes” villain David Anders. Heck, even Meyers’ “Tudors” co-star Henry Cavill could fit the bill. Of course, there are literally hundreds of established movie stars that Cruise could pass the baton to, from “Bourne” star Matt Damon to “Terminator: Salvation” breakout Sam Worthington to the multi-faceted Sam Rockwell to… well… whoever. The pool of A-List and B-List candidates is truly endless. Maybe the most obvious possibility is that THR’s speculation won’t pan out, and that Tom Cruise will be back in a leading man capacity. As the trade itself notes, both Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis pulled off extraordinary box office numbers with fourth installments in the “Indiana Jones” and “Die Hard” franchises, respectively — and they both have several years on Cruise. Still, it’s worth wondering how the “Mission: Impossible” series should proceed with its fourth installment. Should Cruise and Abrams be looking towards tomorrow, bringing in a fresh face to represent several new films to come? Or does Cruise still have it in him for at least one more “Impossible” mission? http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/06/18/if-tom-cruise-doesnt-headline-mission-impossible-iv-then-who-should-take-his-place/

Êèöóíý: Âåëüâåò ïèøåò: Meyers is only 32 years old and he has pre-established history within the “Impossible” franchise. Those factors, along with the cheaper paycheck he would draw as compared to an actor of Tom Cruise’s caliber, mean you could have the perfect and in many ways ready-made replacement for Ethan Hunt. The face of Hugo Boss stepped out with Belfast model Katie Larmour, while he was taking a break from filming the widely-anticipated latest series of The Tudors. The two have become close over the past few months, with Jonathan even whisking the Belfast beauty to Paris last year to enjoy a romantic weekend together. The 31-year-old, who has received widespread critical acclaim for his lusty portrayal of Henry VIII, also took the time to reassure his fans who have been following media reports that he had recently endured another stint in rehab for his battle with the bottle. "I'm okay, there's no need to worry, I'm doing fine," he said. The Cork-born star enjoyed dinner in Bang Cafe with the 5ft 5ins beauty and a host of crew members from The Tudors, as they celebrated a friend's birthday. They then went on to the exclusive Residence member's bar on St Stephen's Green where they continued to party the night away. - NIAMH HORAN Entertainment Reporter http://www.independent.ie/national-news/no-worries-for-tudors-star-on-the-town-with-latest-squeeze-1782437.html

Ëýéëè: Óæàñ êàêîé òî!

Âåëüâåò: Something strange is happening to our leading men - they are fading, blurring and losing their edge. Visit the cinema or turn on the television and you'll see an endless string of interchangeable heroes whose unique selling point is that they don't have one. It seems that the days are largely gone when young actors were hired for their individual charms and charisma - think Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson. A trend that started a few years ago has become so widespread that we are now presented with heroes whose cloned looks are so bland they are defined by each film they make, instead of the other way round. Far from insisting on acting ability or screen presence, directors and producers are demanding that their leading men are so indistinguishable that they end up blending together in audiences' minds: Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner battle for Kristen Stewart's heart in Twilight, but the sweep of their floppy hair and the gaze of their long-lashed, doe-like eyes are so similar that it is no surprise that the fictional Bella has trouble making her choice. Blair faces the same problem in Gossip Girl when she is asked to choose between the baby-faced Ed Westwick and the cherub-cheeked Chace Crawford. Pattinson not only resembles Lautner: both also share the antiseptically handsome facial traits of Westwick and Crawford. All four boy-men have an uncanny similarity to the soft cheekbones and gentle jawlines of Ian Somerhalder from Lost, who himself looks like Ashton Kutcher, Chris Pine from Star Trek, James Marsden from Hairspray and Mr Scarlett Johansson, Ryan Reynolds. The list doesn't end there: in Britain there is Jonathan Rhys Meyers of The Tudors, Sam Preston of The Ordinary Boys and Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey. Then there is Chris Evans of the Fantastic Four, who shares the same full, soft lips and perfectly symmetrical face as Robert Buckley from Lipstick Jungle, and Jason Segel, the wide-eyed Marshall in How I Met Your Mother The New York Observer is so convinced of the phenomenon it has christened the "new male beauty" that it has identified a formula describing the precise science of the identikit look. "Those wide-set eyes, the narrow nose that flares up at the tip just so, the childish puffy cheeks and the not-too-rugged jaw lines, topped with carefully placed strands of layered hair," wrote Irina Aleksander. "Compared to the new male beauty, even Justin Timberlake and Adrian Grenier seem distinctive and grizzled. It's a face that used to only be found in teen magazines, to be tacked on to the petal-pink bedroom walls of adolescent girls. Now it dominates the box office." Heroines used to be the interchangeable ones. With characters largely defined by their hair colour - sizzling blonde or serious brunette - a woman's screen presence was intended as an undistracting background against which leading men could define themselves and shine. But now, say casting agents, directors and psychologists, today's up-and-coming male stars are so similar that industry bosses are able to replace one with another with barely a pause for thought. It is unthinkable that a director could replace, say, George Clooney with Clive Owen or Leonardo DiCaprio without substantial rewrites to suit the defining characteristics of his new leading man. But when Zac Efron recently made a last-minute decision to pull out of the remake of the 1980s hit, Footloose, Paramount barely flinched. Instead the studio replaced him with another wide-eyed, soft-faced beauty: Crawford. And got on with shooting the film. Efron was apparently shocked by the speed of his replacement, made so seamlessly that his precipitate departure didn't delay the film's release date for a single day. He is not alone in discovering the insecurity that comes with being just one pretty face among many. The ease with which such decisions can be made by directors who can choose from a stable of interchangeable leading men was also a shock to Tobey Maguire, who withdrew his threat to pull out of the Spider-Man franchise after director Sam Raimi said Maguire could be easily replaced with Jake Gyllenhaal. The lure of the new male beauty is spreading beyond Hollywood. It is increasingly being lionised on the catwalk, where a few years ago it was the size-zero boys, with their undernourished, sexually ambivalent figures who called the fashion shots. Now, however, the physiques of the models have become rounded; their angular edges softened and their emaciated faces feminised. The adoration of the baby-faced look reached its apogee in the fashion world this month when Yves St Laurent preceded his spring 2010 men's show with a short film in Paris featuring Jules, the 11-year-old son of the film's director and writer, Samuel Benchetrit. In the eight-minute short, Jules finds a key to a hotel room. Once inside, he rifles through an adult's wardrobe, puts on a man's blazer, reads a love letter and watches porn. Dr Steven Pearlman, a former president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, said his patients have started citing Efron's features as their ideal, instead of the more manly look they have favoured in the past. Individuality, he said, has been overrun by the quest for perfect proportion. "Fifteen years ago men absolutely wanted to maintain that rugged look, which meant that higher bridge and stronger features. Now they want a softer look," he said. "Even just a couple of years ago, we were talking about Orlando Bloom, Justin Timberlake and Leonardo DiCaprio. Now it's Zac. Our culture is leaning towards a more empathetic man who can understand a woman's feelings, and that comes out in new facial features." Historically, male sex appeal used to be diametrically opposed to this fascination with the pre-pubescent look of the man-child: think the remote, heavy countenance of Marlon Brando, the pronounced features of Sean Penn and the expressive eyes of Nicholson and Clooney. "High testosterone is about prominent chins, deep-set eyes, heavy brows, a full head of hair and strong features," said Aleksander. "That's the caveman who could inseminate you and procreate." So why has it happened? In her 2003 book, The Boy, Germaine Greer lamented the increase in the number of "simpering 30-year-olds with shaved chests" who attempt to imitate " the short-lived beauty of [real] boys". Why, instead of seeking out manly men, are girls preferring the big eyes and rounded features more usually associated with babies? It could be that female audiences are reacting to an era in which traditional masculinity has left a sinking economy, the possibility of environmental catastrophe and violent conflicts in the Middle East and beyond, by yearning for a softer and nurturing hero. Research by psychologists at St Andrews University found that women use a man's face to judge how he will behave in a relationship. "Women find delicate features more trustworthy and caring," said Professor David Perret. "Features such as enlarged cheekbones, jaws and chins are seen as masculine, but, if a woman is looking to settle down, she will look for a guy with a level of femininity." Lynda Boothroyd, a psychologist at Durham University, agreed. When women are looking for the perfect man, Boothroyd found, they overwhelmingly choose pretty boys such as Leonardo DiCaprio and singer Enrique Iglesias over "rougher" men. "Women may want muscle in the short term, but long term they prefer men with more feminine features, associating this with fidelity, warmth and better parenting." The attraction of the feminine man is that of the mirror image or soul mate. "Teenage girls who are alarmed by their own suddenly visible sexuality react instinctively against manly features," she said. "Girls are also exaggeratedly maternal and they respond - don't we all? - to sweetness and poignancy. The lost boy is an irresistible figure. Feminine features convey youth, and young men are instinctively less sexist - and racist - than older ones." But Andrea Oliveri, the editorial projects director at Details magazine, who is responsible for choosing the publication's cover boys, disagreed. For her, it is Hollywood that is engendering these Stepford Wife-like New Male Beauties, not the other way around. "High School Musical was successful not because Zac Efron was in it: Zac became famous as a result of the huge phenomenon that it is ," she said. "I mean, you didn't know who Rob Pattinson was a year ago, you never even heard his name! And now he's this phenomenon as a result of Twilight." This, say the experts, is where the lasting impact of New Male Beauty will be felt. If studios can coax audiences to accept an army of light-eyed, interchangeable drones - in the place of specific stars with their sky-high salaries and outrageous demands - then they are the overall winners. http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/jun/28/fashion-male-beauty

Âåëüâåò: For once, Leigh Arnold and Marcus Sweeney weren't the focus for all eyes in Residence last weekend. On the Friday night it was the turn of Jonathan Rhys Meyers -- happily, far away from any airport unpleasantness -- and his latest love interest, Northern Ireland TV presenter Katie Larmour. It's nice to see a girl with her head on her shoulders, because when the pint-sized heart-throb held court with numerous other ladies in waiting -- sorry, I mean ladies -- at the bar of the Stokes brothers' private members club in Stephen's Green, she didn't bat an eyelid. The pair were earlier in Bang Cafe, also owned by the Stokes boys, as were Virginia Macari and her Norwegian boyfriend Kas. Also creating a frisson in Residence last week, albeit for different reasons, was none other than Ian Galvin. The fashion mogul flew Karen Millen's creative director Gemma Metheringham over from London to show a preview of Karen's autumn collection. The show was attended by Sunday Independent fashion editrix Constance Harris and the two Jackies -- Lavin and Rafter -- among others Busty designer Virginia and Kas, meanwhile, were expected at this weekend's Respect Lions lunch -- to raise funds for the charity which cares for people with intellectual disabilities -- at the Four Seasons Hotel, along with Ronan Ryan and girlfriend Pamela Flood. http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/news-gossip/katie-unfazed-as-tudors-star-holds-court-with-ladies-1794672.html

Âåëüâåò: GIVE ME A BREAK: WHEN I WAS a kid growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, there were two big events on hot summer days: the arrival of the ice cream man at dusk and then about an hour later, the trapping of fireflies in glass jars. When I was sixteen, I started working in the summers and haven’t stopped since. My children have a rather different life. “How did it go?” I ask. “It was OK.” My 14-year-old daughter replies, just back from her fitting at Ardmore Studios and leaving me gagging for information. “What’s your costume like?” “It’s like a brownish-blackish bin bag with buttons,” she says, totally deadpan. “So, what were the people like? Did you meet anyone famous?” My daughter thinks this is a sad question. “They’re all just normal people, Mom.” “I suppose they are,” I say. I quite like the notion of Jonathan Rhys Meyers being just normal people. I also wouldn’t be averse to running in to him at Ardmore Studios while he was having a costume fitting. “So did you meet King Henry?” “Who?” She is blasé. She is so comfortable in her role as a glorified extra that I fear she may have inherited the theatre gene from certain members of the family. “You know, Jonathan Rhys Meyers.” The name trips off my tongue. My daughter and her fellow choir singers at the Kingstown Academy in Dún Laoghaire have been hired to sing religious music by Thomas Tallis for King Henry in what I gather is an extravagant court scene. “Jonathan who?” she asks. The really hot guy that’s the star of the show, I want to say, but I don’t. Hearing your mother call a younger man “hot” wouldn’t go down well. “I was just wondering if you happened to meet Jonathan Rhys Meyers, that’s all.” “Oh, him. He’s old, Mom.” Too young for me, too old for her. What a tragedy. Aside from the chance of meeting the fabulous JRM, the real advantage to having your daughter in The Tudors is that it’s like free summer camp. She’s been in rehearsals for the past couple of weeks and tomorrow’s shooting of her scene has been a deadline to aim for. Since school ended, I haven’t once heard her say “I’m bored.” “I get paid,” she tells me. “How much?” “?18. Do we need it for the bills or can I keep it?” “You can keep it,” I answer. I want her to buy herself something pretty. My eldest has been a brilliant unofficial au pair for the other two. When I come home in the evenings I find that she and her younger siblings have cleaned the kitchen and done laundry. Apart from the younger daughter’s near-misses with JRM, the children’s daily highlights are walking the dogs and because the weather has been amazing, going for a swim down at Sandycove. Maybe if I could afford language courses and summer camps and sailing lessons they’d be more enriched, but I have a notion that being left to their own devices doesn’t hold them back at all. They’re lucky to live in such a lovely place in such beautiful weather. But at the end of the week my eldest is going to France with a friend’s family. People who bring your kids on holiday are generous and it gives your teenager yet another experience of relative independence in a safe environment. She’s going to have a chance to speak French with locals, which will be great preparation for next year’s Leaving Cert, but we will all miss her. Every time she goes away, it’s like another little tendon of connection is being torn away. It has to happen. She has to grow up and she’s very good at growing up, but part of me still wants her to be a little girl in a flowery dress looking for bugs in the garden. My son, meanwhile, is quite happy knocking a tennis ball around, with him as Roddick and me as Williams. Problem is, the balls keep flying out of the garden and into the neighbours’, never to be found again. He’s also entertained by his iPod touch (given to him by his father who got it for free due to his 02 upgrade but he couldn’t figure out how to use it) and his Playstation. I feel guilty for not indulging him with one enriching experience after the next but I can’t help thinking that the B-word (as in bored) is a good thing if it makes him pick up a book. Dad, meanwhile, is at his own summer camp this week in Bantry, teaching a screenwriting course. The only one without a summer camp is me. The Irish Times office is definitely not a summer camp these days, with the sun streaming through windows that we can’t open. With kids at home that I would really rather be with than here, I feel like a trapped firefly. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2009/0707/1224250169214.html

Âåëüâåò: Woody Allen must have some kind of compulsion to keep making films He puts out so much that I didn't even know that Larry David is in his latest. I thought Match Point was good, though. In a way I respected it because it was so un-Woody Allen. But that might be because Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' performing style is so wooden that he can't 'do' the generic 'Woody Allen' character. I like the fact that Woody is still excited about his craft. Even though some of his films will be considered better than others, he's still really excited about making films, and at his age, I think that's really inspiring. A lot of people just stop doing things – they get to a certain age and just have no real interest in life and become boring. Yes we are talking about a guy who's been worrying and whinging about death for forty, fifty years now. I guess it's kind of strange to still be 'excited' about worrying and whinging about death after so long... But the ideas – I'm sure he has a notebook in which he's always plotting, you know, 'Who can I get to play that part, or that part...' He's still actively involved in producing art. Whatever you want to say about it – you might say, it's not good, or it's shit compared to his other stuff – but just the very fact that he's still actively producing films, is inspiring. http://thequietus.com/articles/02083-of-montreal-s-kevin-barnes-on-woody-allen-his-films

Âåëüâåò: Íà Ýììè â ýòîì ãîäó Äæîíàòàí íå íîìèíèðîâàí Emmy rerun: All six lead drama actors could be repeat nominees According our resident Emmy experts — forums moderators Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria, who also contribute to AwardsHeaven.net — the contenders for best lead actor in a drama series all will have at least one previous Emmy nomination. Indeed, Rob thinks the lineup will be a complete repeat of last year, while Boomer bumps out three-time champ James Spader ("Boston Legal") for Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), who had to sit out the derby last year due to the writers' strike. Kiefer Sutherland 24 Simon Baker The Mentalist 738194025 news Last year, this Emmy category was supposed to have five nominees, but ended up with six due to an accounting glitch: the contenders in the fifth and six positions were so close in votes that the TV academy included them both. This year, all categories for series actors will have six slots. If their predictions pan out as well as last year – when they both nailed the final nominees – that means returning champ Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") will be facing off against Gabriel Byrne ("In Treatment"), three-time also ran Hugh Laurie ("House"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), and Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") for sure. BEST DRAMA SERIES ACTOR Gabriel Byrne, "In Treatment" – Boomer, Rob Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad" – Boomer, Rob Michael C. Hall, "Dexter" – Boomer, Rob Jon Hamm, "Mad Men" – Boomer, Rob Hugh Laurie, "House" – Boomer, Rob James Spader, "Boston Legal" – Rob Kiefer Sutherland, "24" – Boomer BOOMER'S COMMENTARY: This category is much easier to discuss since I think that five of last year's six nominees will be nominated again. Gabriel Byrne, Bryan Cranston (last year's winner), Michael C. Hall, Jon Hamm and Hugh Laurie all anchor their shows and have seen no decline in popularity with viewers or voters. The one exception from last year's nominees will be James Spader from the long-gone and over-expired "Boston Legal," who'll be replaced by a past winner, Kiefer Sutherland. I would not be surprised to see Simon Baker from "The Mentalist," the most popular rookie show in a while. A return by previous winner Michael Chiklis for the final season of "The Shield" or previous nominee Denis Leary of "Rescue Me" would not be a shocker. Even Bill Paxton of "Big Love" and Jonathan Rhys Meyers of "The Tudors" have an outside shot. ROB'S COMMENTARY: This is a very solid group in a very competitive category. As far as I am concerned, only past multiple winner James Spader is at risk of missing out here. The other five seem like locks to me, save for the possible surprise inclusion of Simon Baker ("The Mentalist"), who may be rewarded for carrying the No. 1 new show of the season; Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"), who has made it to the panel stage in past years, Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") for his final dynamite season as Vic Mackey and Denis Leary ("Rescue Me"), who has been outstanding in his revitalized show. And this doesn’t take into account Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), Emmy fave for portraying the iconic Jack Bauer, who I suspect may miss out here but make up for it in the TV Movie category for the same role. http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2009/07/simon-baker-the-mentalist-mad-men-dexter-kiefer-sutherland.html

Âåëüâåò: Jonathan Rhys Myers ("The Tudors") confesses he’s a lame tennis player. "On ’Match Point’ Woody Allen beat me, but he plays every day, so it’s not so terrible. It’s not a game that requires age it just requires experience, so that’s what I’m really terrible at. And what would I be really good at? I keep my hands pretty clean. I hate untidiness. I can’t be in a place that’s untidy it drives me bananas. So I have to have a tidy, clean, organized space." http://www.bostonherald.com/track/celebrity/view/20090713what_the_stars_do_when_theyre_not_working/srvc=home&position=recent

Âåëüâåò: Outstanding actor in a drama series: Cranston, "Breaking Bad," AMC. Unbelievably great work from Cranston on a series that miraculously got a lot greater. Jon Hamm, "Mad Men," AMC. He broadened the role, shading the character and hinting at past vulnerabilities. Very deft. Michael Chiklis, "The Shield," FX. Chilling. The odds-on favorite. Chiklis goes out the way he came in - with viewers unable to look away from him. Michael C. Hall, "Dexter," Showtime. Even the voiceover work is exceptional. Gabriel Byrne, "In Treatment," HBO. He really does the impossible in this role: He puts thoughtfulness in motion. Edward James Olmos, "Battlestar Galactica," Sci-Fi. Sure, he chews a little scenery, but it's the subdued scenes where he excels. That's an incredible starting six right there. And not a network series star in the mix. Just missing out on the second tier: Kyle Chandler, "Friday Night Lights," NBC. Fantastic. Denis Leary, "Rescue Me," FX. So much more than funny. Hugh Laurie, "House," Fox. Are we taking him for granted? Terry O'Quinn, "Lost," ABC. If he's not the lead, he's the soul. Charlie Hunnam, "Sons of Anarchy," FX. Got better with every episode. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, "The Tudors," Showtime. He makes it look easy, but it's not. Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2009/07/14/DD3Q18N8U4.DTL#ixzz0LM7n9YMQ&C

Âåëüâåò: Today is July 27th, 2009 and we’d like to honor Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Rade Serbedzija as our Creative Artist’s of the Day. Happy birthday to you both! Jonathan Rhys Meyers Born in Dublin, Ireland and turning 32 today is Jonathan Rhys Meyers! I first saw him in “Bend It Like Beckham”, then I rented “Velvet Goldmine” and I was just blown away by his raw talent. He starred in “Vanity Fair”, “Alexander”, “Match Point”, “Mission: Impossible III”, “August Rush” and of course the Showtime series “The Tudors” as King Henry VIII. We wish a wonderful 32nd birthday to Jonathan Rhys Meyers! And now here are some quotes from the man himself. "You get on a set and immediately people are wiping your ass for you, and nobody tells you when you're being an asshole. I'm sure nobody working for Tom Cruise would turn around and say, 'Tom, don't do that anymore because you're a dickhead to do that'. Actually, he might quite like it". “A lot of men are very uptight, but I don't distinguish between male and female beauty. Âåëüâåò: Âñå òàæå ôèãíÿ ïðî êîëüöî Ðèíû è Ìóðÿ HAS hunky Tudors' star Jonathan Rhys Meyers popped the question to stunning long-term girlfriend Reena Hammer? That was the question on fans' lips last night as the actor attended U2's final Croke Park concert, wearing what looked suspiciously like a wedding or engagement band. The actor and some-time model attended the concert with his long-term girlfriend. The couple were hand-in-hand through most of the night. Reena has provided her partner with much support since the death of his mother in November 2007. Other guests included celebrity solicitor Gerald Kean and his partner Lisa Murphy, magician Keith Barry and his wife Mairead Barry and comedienne Katherine Lynch. ELITE And while many of those in the elite VIP pit chose to continue the post-concert celebrations in the leafy surrounds of the Four Season's Hotel in Ballsbridge, top model Pippa O'Connor and her other half Brian Ormond were among those who headed for Lillie's Bordello in the hope Bono and co might make an appearance. However, the band didn't turn up. Instead, the band flew on their private jet to travel to their luxurious Eze hideaway in the South of France to relax before their next show on Friday night. Meanwhile, there was some criticism last night after it emerged that RTE were entertaining clients at the U2 concert in a plush corporate box. It is understood that the entertainment cost Montrose chiefs ?45,000 -- but comes just weeks after staff at RTE were asked to take a 10pc pay cut. However, a spokesperson defended the move saying it was necessary for RTE to provide entertainment to corporate clients. http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/does-reenas-ring-reveal-tudors--heartthrob-has-found-his-queen-1843989.html

Âåëüâåò: This month renowned knitwear designer Lainey Keogh celebrates her milestone 50th birthday and to mark the occasion Brown Thomas are staging an exchibition of her most iconic work. Lainey's designs have long been popular with the rich and famous and many of them attended the event to show their support. Half of all sales of pieces created especially for the event will go the the ISPCA and the Children's Chernoybal Project and Lainey gave us a personal tour of the collection, highlighting 'The Spells Dress, which was worn by Naomi Campbell in 2003. The dress has all the elements of magic and mysticism woven into it - feathers, flowers, birds and butterflies in every colour you can possibly imagine. Lainey loves being surprised by her new creations. She says that the materials she works with are enchanting and unpredictabel - you can't ever say how the finished piece will look. Another highlight is a beautiful full length cardigan Lainey made for Isabella blow. It was entirely hand worked on the loom and used every piece of black fibre in the workshop. Lainey is now working with handweavers in Nepal who use their ancient traditions to create stunning pieces. As Jonathan Rhys Meyers says - it's quite something to walk into Saks 5th Avenue and see an Irish designer taking pride of place. http://www.rte.ie/tv/offtherails/2007/1121/laineykeogh.html

Âåëüâåò: Troubled Jonathan Rhys Meyers has been moved out of his ?2m city centre apartment by his Tudors bosses. The Cork-born hunk, who has reconciled with his former girlfriend, had been staying in a penthouse apartment on exclusive Appian Way as he films the final few weeks of the hit series. However, the Herald can reveal how HBO chiefs have now decided to take him out of his Dublin pad and move him to a quieter place near Bray's Ardmore studios -- where there are fewer distractions. The star has hit the headlines for a number of incidents in recent months, most recently after pictures emerged of his arrest by police at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. Custody After falling off the wagon, onlookers claimed that he allegedly taunted them and challenged them to a fight before being taken into police custody. Since then, TV chiefs have insisted the gorgeous star stays booze-free for the remaining few weeks that he is filming The Tudors. A source revealed how the apartment had been rented out for the 10 weeks that the star was filming his starring role in the historical drama about King Henry VIII. Yet he was there for just six weeks before being moved to a quiet place, away from his usual party crew. "A number of photographers also knew he was there and that added more pressure on his shoulders," she said. "He is coping very well on set but everyone is afraid that one little thing could set him off. He is now staying closer to the studio and that suits everyone. It means he can have lie-ins without having to worry about being late for filming. Even better, he doesn't have the temptations of city-centre living on his doorstep." Georgian Although the actor already owns an apartment on George's Street, studio bosses shelled out thousands of euro to rent a Georgian three-bedroomed apartment so they could keep an eye on him. The star is still managing to make the most of his time in Dublin though. He was spotted looking very cosy with on/off girlfriend Rheena Hammer after the pair stepped out together at the final U2 gig in Croke Park. Rhys-Meyers has been dating the British heiress for more than four years but their relationship has been peppered with problems. However, she set tongues wagging that they have moved their romance up a notch after being snapped sporting a shiny new rock on her wedding finger. Just a few weeks previously, the actor was photographed leaving Bang cafe with his good pal, top model Katie Lamour. http://www.herald.ie/entertainment/around-town/rhys-meyers-moved-out-of-party-zone-1850215.html

Probably “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor – the Rocky theme song. What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod? Lady Gaga – Poker Face. It’s not a bad tune though! What’s the best cartoon of all-time? Alvin and the Chipmunks. I was all over that as a kid. What was your favorite cereal as a kid? Either Fruit Loops or Frosted Flakes and I liked them both pretty equally. Did you have any special skills as a kid? Not really, but I played almost any sport you could imagine – soccer, baseball, basketball, golf; I played everything. You played out in L.A. so tell us, who’s the most famous person in your address book? I have a few, but I probably shouldn’t sell them out and name any names! Âåëüâåò: You know what they say: begin with the evening show, and the Afternoon Show won't be far behind. Sile Seoige has achieved the first requirement by making a stunning re-entry to the Irish social scene. Hooray, I hear all you couch potatoes cry. Hold fast a little. The girl with the most beautiful smile in Ireland isn't home and dry yet, but on the evidence of last week it's only a matter of time. And that, I believe is what RTE bosses are thinking too. Sile, whose show with her sister Grainne was mystifyingly not re-commissioned by RTE in April, was in Residence last weekend happily chatting with friends -- and for once the recently separated TV star seemed like she didn't have a care in the world. Likewise Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The actor was seen walking breezily around Harvey Nicks in Dundrum shopping centre last week with girlfriend Reena Hammer. My moles in Dundrum tell me that he was looking after Reena and mostly "helping her choose some items from the new autumn/winter collections". Choosing clothes for your girlfriend? Âåëüâåò: The ladies of The View are quite a collection of characters, and it’s no secret that Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck don’t always get along. The co-hosts are all sharing one thing however — the October cover of Ladies Home Journal. Inside they dish on their chemistry, their disagreements and their success. On the secret of their success: Barbara: “The chemistry is the most important thing. We have been imitated again and again – by men, by other programs – and the thought is there should be one older person, one comedian, one black person, and one younger person, and that will make it work. And it doesn’t. Our roles on the show have changed and I think we’re better than ever because of this group.” On disagreeing on set: Whoopi: “There are times when you think, I shouldn’t have said that, and I’m sorry. But nobody cares if you say something tough – it’s over and done with. They’re like, No, no, no I know what you meant. The next day you’re back on cue. Or five minutes later, after the commercial, you’re back to being the two of you.” Elizabeth: “We know what triggers the other person, but we also believe what we believe. It’s all up for discussion, and we know we’re all coming back tomorrow. So we love each other even though we don’t always agree.” Joy: “We are a reality show of the real kind. You watch the Jon & Kate Plus 8 shows, but they’ve been faking things for two years. We have a real show, we are real people and the audience relates to that.” About the fighting rumors: Whoopi: “The idea was put into people’s minds before I arrived – that was played up with [former co-host] Rosie [O'Donnell], and it stuck. I think for a while things got more personal than they should have and people glommed onto that. I think people want there to be feuds. But I am too lazy to fight – it takes too much energy to keep it going.” Elizabeth: “I typically get two comments. One is, ‘I feel so bad for you.’ Or: ‘That has to be difficult to do every day.’ Neither is true, and I don’t enjoy pity. Anyway, the show isn’t as interesting when we agree.” On memorable guests: Sherri: “I love the gorgeous men who come through and that I get to put my hand on their thighs. The guys love it. Robert Downey Jr. put my head in his lap. And they kiss you. What kind of job do I have? Every man I love turns around and gives me a kiss. When [Barack] Obama showed up, I was like, this is it, I am done. And Jonathan Rhys Meyers? I am like a predator cougar on that boy. I will hurt you.” On their male fans: Barbara: “I don’t think of us as a woman’s show. I was at the Michael Jackson memorial, and these male cops kept saying, ‘I watch your show every day!” Elizabeth: “My husband, Tim [Hasselbeck, former NFL quarterback] has played for two or three teams since I’ve been on the show, and every team he’s been on, they all watch the show while they’re icing their legs. They sit and watch and try to get what women are about.” On Barbara’s little-known expertise: Sherri: “Barbara gives the best single-women advice…about raising my son and relationships. She also gives good advice about sex.” Barbara: “Yeah, because I know so much about sex. I think I learned it all on the show.” http://www.okmagazine.com/2009/09/the-ladies-of-the-view-open-up-cover-it-all/

Âåëüâåò: Ireland has no problem pumping out the Hollywood heart-throbs. Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne and Daniel Day-Lewis (yes, we've decided he's Irish) are still producing high-profile work in the States. The next generation of male A-listers already have their feet under the Tinseltown table: Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers are all box-list names to a varying degree. And they are budging up to make room for Kerry's finest Michael Fassbender, currently seen stealing of one of the finest scenes in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. But the cinema-loving Irish public are desperate for a female Hollywood A-lister to call their own. We still hark back to the glory days of Alison Doody as the love interest in Indiana Jones, or Brenda Fricker's Oscar-winning turn in My Left Foot. Every time a household name in Ireland shows a flicker of interest in an acting career -- most recently, Caroline Morahan and Rosanna Davison -- the bookies start offering odds on the chances of them winning an Oscar by 2015. If we were only to look in less obvious quarters, we would see there are a number of fine young Irish actresses emerging from the shadow of the Colins and the Cillians. Ireland has a proud theatrical tradition in which brilliant actors like Ger Ryan, Dearbhla Molloy, Derbhla Crotty, Fiona O'Shaughnessy, Aisling O'Sullivan, Eileen Walsh and Ali White continue to move audiences. It is always a matter of speculation to wonder if Ireland, with its relatively small population, will produce another star as well-known as Maureen O'Hara. For a while it seemed like actresses like Ruth Negga (Breakfast On Pluto), Flora Montgomery (When Brendan Met Trudy) and Eva Birthistle (Ae Fond Kiss) were on the brink of international fame. But the dream doesn't seem to have quite materialised for them. However, there are a number of other young female actors whose early CVs are already bearing Hollywood credits. The attitude appears to have changed too, with the realisation that Irish actresses don't just have to be big fish in a small pond. Sarah Bolger, the 18-year-old Dublin star of The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Tudors and In America embodies this 'can-do' confidence. She told me in an interview earlier this year: "I feel like the last couple of years it has been Colin, Cillian and Jonathan. The last Irish woman I can think of is Brenda Fricker. Irish women have to get up there and say: Move over, gentlemen!" http://www.independent.ie/entertainment/film-cinema/first-colin-then-cillian--and-now-its-the-cailiacuteniacute-1879785.html

Âåëüâåò: Òóò Äæîíàòàí ñ Ðèíîé õîäèëè íà ñâèäàíèå â Äóáëèíå) Jonathan Rhys Meyers is wisely choosing to stay away from booze. The troubled Irish star was spotted on a hot date at a posh Dublin restaurant, and onlookers say he didn’t touch the sauce. It’s encouraging news, given that the actor has checked into rehab on three separate occasions and arrested twice in alcohol-related charges. Concerns about “The Tudors” star’s drinking problems sparked Showtime studio bosses to order Rhys Meyers to stay clean while filming the latest season of the hit show this summer. The 32-year-old Dubliner decided to obey authority while dining out at the Dublin restaurant Pichet with a mystery blonde bombshell. Rhys Meyers passed up wine offers and chose to sip on lemonade instead. A witness told Ireland’s Herald: "He didn't touch a drop all night – he stuck to the soft drinks the whole night and was overheard telling the waiter that a good friend had recommended Pichet to him." The Irish actor, dressed in his trademark jeans, biker boots and leather jacket, and his date, a petite blonde who was certainly not on-and-off girlfriend of five years Reena Hammer, were seen gazing in each other’s eyes while deep in conversation all night. "She was a stunning blonde and very petite – she looked like a model but was quite timid,” the source said. “He came in a little while later and was the total opposite. He was very gregarious, chatting away the whole time.” Though happy he’s sober, now all Rhys Meyers fans want to know is who was his mystery dinner date? http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers-wisely-stays-away-from-alcohol-on-hot-date-59242867.html

Âåëüâåò: I’ve become massively obsessed with the Tudors recently, and seeing as I have been away, all I can say is thank God for Sky Plus. I watched the two previous series, downloading them on iTunes which cost me an arm and a leg. Incidentally, why on earth have iTunes put the price up from £1.79 to £2.49? Hello? I thought they were trying to encourage people to stop downloading illegally? Making legal downloads more expensive isn’t the best plan! Anyway, the Tudors is awesome. It’s got a kind of glossy American quality to it, but without the cheesiness and the bad acting that you sometimes see. It’s a perfect mix of impressive American production values (cue the American voiceover-‘Previously on the Tudors’) and good old British intelligence, and the result is that the script is clever and subtle rather than obvious and crass, and the acting is generally brilliant. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is amazing as Henry VIII, playing a slightly different King that you might expect. He’s a good looking, intense guy with a hot temper, rather than a fat bloater. Add model and actor Henry Cavill into the mix, and most of the female viewing public are in danger of fainting (lucky they are sitting on the sofa). So don’t be put off by the ‘historical’ vibe, it’s full of action and sex-its cracking viewing. My advice would be to order the first series pronto. http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/blog/2009/10/jules-knights-blake-blog-2980/

Âåëüâåò: Lauren Conrad’s former boss Kelly Cutrone has a suggestion on who should play her in “The Hills” star upcoming movie – Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers. In Conrad’s book “L.A. Candy,” which is loosely based on the MTV star’s life, the Kelly Cutrone character is the fictional tough-as-nails PR boss Fiona Chen. Now that “L.A. Candy” is being made into a movie, Conrad needs someone to portray the People’s Revolution founder on the big screen. “What about Jonathan Rhys Meyers? That could be really good crossover role for him," Cutrone suggested to MTV News. The fashion icon, who is now featured in “The Hills” spinoff “The City,” has a few runner-ups in mind as well. "They would have to have black hair — they would have to be slightly on the mean side. I would like Cher to play me," she said. "I think that would be really great. She's ageless and she has long black hair and she wears all black and she could be really mean.” Her other choice? Acting vet Anjelica Huston, who was born in Ireland. "Anjelica Huston could play me," Cutrone said. "I mean, I think we should bring back some of the great ones — they're older. They're more established. And they have the ability to be mean.” But in the end, Cher and Jonathan win the casting competition. “I like Cher. I think we should just go with Cher — Jonathan Rhys Meyers or Cher." http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/The-Hills-and-The-City-boss-Kelly-Cutrone-would-cast-Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers-to-play-her-in-LA-Candy-67738812.html

Âåëüâåò: The last time I met Jonathan Rhys Myers in Hollywood was at the Golden Globes in January, where he was nominated for a Globe for Best Actor in the Tudors. He was very far from relaxed the whole evening and ended the night seemingly plastered in a dingy tourist bar on the Sunset Strip. There has been a lot of concern expressed about his well-being since then, after he failed to show up at two different events where he was due to receive awards for his work and it was reported that he had gone into rehab in late February. When I met him in Beverly Hills last week, he looked tanned and healthy, dressed in a mustard coloured leather jacket and white shirt. He let it be known pretty quickly that his disposition towards the Irish media these days is far from friendly. “ I haven’t had a drink in years, not a drop”, he says inhaling deeply on a Marlboro light. So where has he been for the past few months and how did the rehab go? The question irks him. “ I was in Middlesex for the whole period, in the countryside. I did not go into rehab, no, no, no,” he says swigging from a large glass of orange juice. “I was staying in the countryside in Middlesex with my councillor, but we are actually really good friends, so it wasn’t a rehab. I wasn’t doing treatment for alcoholism, I’d done that already. I don’t drink at all.” We are off to such a tense start, I decide there is no point in avoiding the questions that everyone would like answered. If he doesn’t drink, how come he was photographed coming out of an off-license in London last month and also was photographed being held up on the street in LA by Jim Sheridan in January. “ Someone said there were photos of me alright, so I went and looked on the internet and that photo was from six or seven months previously,” he says, arms now folded defensively across his chest. “If I’m not at something, they’ll just print an old photo of me. I go out for a night out once a year or something like that and it just ends up in the newspaper because you’re a celebrity. It’s very hard for the media with actors like me, because I don’t date other actresses and I don’t hang out with movie stars. “ It’s very hard to find stories about me, because I live an incredibly low key life. I think people would like to think I’m a hell of a lot naughtier than I am actually. I am actually quite a boring guy. I spent the last week and a half playing bloody golf. Me, Jonathan Rhys Myers! If anyone saw me in those stupid golf clothes on the golf course, there would have been a different story written!” Since filming of the third season of the Tudors ended last summer, Rhys Myers has been on hiatus, working on a movie, but enjoying a lot of time off. Filming of the fourth season will begin soon and in the meantime, he is enjoying spending time in LA with his three brothers, one of whom also lives here and the others who are visiting from Spain and London. All are musicians who play together in a band called “Suzy’s Field”. “ All actors are frustrated musicians,” laughs the actor who played such a sweet “Elvis” in the CBS series a few years ago, for which he was nominated for a Grammy and a Golden Globe. “ I just felt I needed time off and I didn’t need to go to awards ceremonies,” he says of his non-attendance at the IFTA awards and the Oscar Wilde event in February. “You can get slightly waylaid as an actor doing that sort of thing and I’m never that comfortable at them anyway. But you know what Irish newspapers are like, there are always going to be more aspects on your personal life than your professional life, because you’re an Irish person so they tend to make up or embellish whichever story, trying to sell newspapers.” He refuses to give an example of what he believes was falsely reported about him in the Irish papers, but he quickly makes a parallel with what he says is a co-dependant relationship between the British royal family and British press. “ Royalty is almost exclusively an English art at this point. I mean the money, the revenue that they make, just think of the magazine columns! Prince William or Prince Harry and whatever strumpet they have on their arms that day, millions and millions of pounds.” So how attractive is it for him to be playing an English monarch, as Henry VIII in The Tudors? “ I think the reasons royals are so attractive is, what actor doesn’t want to play the guy sitting on the throne, with everybody looking at them, with those amazing costumes and all those lines,” he laughs, warming up a little. “Actor-royal, royal-acting!” Rhys Myers talent and range have propelled him straight onto the Hollywood A List, alongside Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johannson and Reese Witherspoon. Not yet 32 years old, he has already been in 36 movies and three tv series. Not bad for someone who appears to be battling his private demons and lost who his mother, Geraldine suddenly two years ago, and to whom he had been very close. “ I believe that everything I’ve done up to now has been an apprenticeship. The first phase was where I was allowed to play roles, have successes, have failures, all of this by the time I was 31. That’s the apprenticeship. What I do from 31 to 50 is probably my career, so I probably haven’t even started yet.” What kind of friendship or mentorship has he received from other Irish stars, like Colin Farrell, who’ve made it big and have also struggled with addiction? “ I think a lot of artists understand it, because it’s part of the artistic thing. For me, it’s like various phases, like any young fella would go through in his 20’s when you’ve suddenly got a ton of money and a lot of downtime. “ But it’s grand. You just kind of put it in the past. You make your choices and you trust the people you trust and if you trust yourself, then it all works out.” These days, he says he plays a lot of sports, like skiing and golf and he writes a lot. Who does he share his life with? “ Several people, I suppose, several people who are close to me. It’s extraordinary but I live my life much more Spartan than people would imagine I would. I don’t have many things. I don’t accumulate possessions. I am not into money, apart from the essential of what you need to live on. But I do require peace and quiet and I require tidiness. “ On Sunday mornings I clean my house. It’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen. It’s my ritual. It’s fantastic. I don’t have a cleaner. I am not very good with my hands but I think if I was good with my fingers I think something like origami would be very good for me; something that’s very sort of neat and tidy. “ I think it’s probably a little sort of actor OCD but I constantly have to have everything spotless and in mint condition before I read, especially. I have to have the whole room almost feng shui, before I read. It’s just one of those weird actor things, but it’s just another fragment to throw into the other part.” http://patriciadanaher.net/writings_rhysmyers.html

Kidd presented designer John Rocha with the coveted Best Fashion Designer Award at the Off the Rails Fashion Awards in the RDS, Dublin. The British catwalk star insisted she was a "big supporter of Irish fashion" and was thrilled to be attending the event. Actress and author Amy Huberman, a star of RTE's 'The Clinic', was delighted to be chosen as the best-dressed female celebrity. Her delight was relayed to the audience in the RDS Simmonscourt via a pre-recorded video link. The fiancee of Leinster rugby star Brian O'Driscoll was unable to attend on the night as she was in Cork for work on a new show. Despite her absence she thanked the fashion-conscious 'RTE Guide' readers who had voted to put her on a shortlist for the prestigious prize. "I was so excited to find out that I had won this award, especially when it was a public vote and there were so many other stylish women in the category," she said. "It's incredibly flattering, so I'd really like to thank anyone that voted for me." She also gave a few nuggets of information about her own fashion choices: "You dress for yourself essentially, so it's nice when people admire a style or how you put things together. "It such a nice award to get. I'm a huge girly girl and I just love clothes." RTE fashion editor Janet Butler collected the award for best dressed male celebrity on behalf of Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The star of 'The Tudors' was also missing as he had to fly out of Ireland immediately after filing the fourth series of the drama. The judging panel bestowed the best stylist award on Paula Hughes. Before the awards ceremony got under way, models displaying outfits from Coast, Oasis and TopShop got into their stride with smart styling from Graham Cruz, and Joanne Hynes showed off fabulous evening wear. http://www.independent.ie/national-news/catwalk-kidd-is-a--big-fan-of-irish-fashion-1943509.html

Âåëüâåò: Òàêè Äæîíàòàíó ÷åãî-òî âðó÷àò Saoirse Ronan and J. J. Abrams will be honored at the fifth annual “Oscar Wilde: Honoring the Irish in Film” pre-Academy Awards party on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Ebell of Los Angeles. The event is presented by the US-Ireland Alliance, a non-profit organization created to foster ties between the US and Ireland. The intimate, casual awards ceremony has led to collaboration among artists and business for both countries. James L. Brooks created an episode of The Simpsons about an Irish pub closing. He traveled to Ireland to premiere the episode, which featured his co-honoree Colm Meaney, and performers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Fiona Shaw, who was also an honoree, saw singer Duke Special perform. The Belfast singer/songwriter joined Fiona in the cast of Mother Courage and Her Children, which is currently playing at the National Theatre of London. This time around, US-Ireland Alliance is honoring Saoirse Ronan with the “Wilde Card,” an inaugural award recognizing a rising talent in the film industry. Ronan began her acting career at the age of nine, and went on to recurring roles in two Irish television series, The Clinic and Proof. She has appeared opposite many well-known actors in her career: Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd in I Could Never Be Your Woman; Gillian Armstrong’s Death Defying Acts with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce; and City of Ember, Gil Kenan’s fantasy adventure, with Bill Murray, Tim Robbins, and Toby Jones. In 2007, Ronan starred in Atonement opposite Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. She earned an Oscar Nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Ronan recently completed filming Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones as well as Peter Weir’s The Way Back with Daniel Craig, Ed Harris, and Colin Firth. US-Ireland Alliance President Trina Vargo states that Ronan represents a new generation of electrifying performers. Also being honored is J. J. Abrams, who will be made an “Honorary Irishman.” Vargo comments that Abrams has made his mark in virtually every facet of the business. Abrams is an Emmy and Golden Globe winner best known for his work as creator or co-creator of Lost, Felicity, Alias, and Fringe. He has his own production company, Bad Robot, under which he created and executive produced ABC-TV’s Alias and Lost. Abrams also reveals his musical talent with his four TV shows by composing their theme music. Aside from television, Abrams is a feature film director. His credits include: Taking Care of Business starring Charles Grodin and Jim Belushi; Regarding Henry with Harrison Ford; Forever Young with Mel Gibson; Mission: Impossible III; and Star Trek (2009). He also collaborated with Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay on Armageddon. Other honorees have included Brendan Gleeson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Van Morrison, Terry George, Neil Jordan, Jim Sheridan, and David Holmes. Many honorees at US-Ireland’s party win an Academy Award the next night. When screenwriter Bill Monahan was honored, he won an Academy Award for The Departed. Hansard and Irglova performed at the event before winning an Academy Award for their song “Falling Slowly” from the film Once. Vargo observed that nominees often feel the luck of the Irish from this event. http://www.irishemigrant.com/ie/go.asp?p=story&storyID=5484

Âåëüâåò: Jonathan Rhys Meyers has a busy few months coming up. In addition to saying goodbye to his popular Showtime series “The Tudors,” which begins airing its fourth and final season in January, the Irish actor will also premiere his film with John Travolta, “From Paris With Love,” and begin shooting another project with Kevin Bacon in Belfast. “From Paris With Love” is a spy caper set in France, and it opens on February 5. Check out the trailer here. It looks pretty interesting. Meanwhile, JRM will try his hand at comedy with Bacon in a project called “Whole Lotta Sole,” which is due to be filmed in Belfast. According to “Entertainment Tonight,” JRM plays a thief who tries to rob a fish market, resulting in the taking of Bacon’s character as hostage. Irishman Terry George is a co-writer of the script. “It's very exciting to have one of the best young actors today, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, teamed up with one of the greats, Kevin Bacon,” says the director, Jay Russell. Rhys Meyers and his on-off girlfriend, Reena Hammer, also did their bit for the environment last week by attending the annual Rainforest Project in London hosted by Prince Charles. http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers-keeps-busy-after-wrapping-The-Tudors-70627227.html

Reena, 23, who is the creative director of Urban Retreat, the beauty company founded by her father, George, tells me that she has stuck by the 32-year-old actor, despite reports that she had dumped him because of his drunken behaviour. "We have been together through everything in the past five years," she says. "Marriage has come up a few times as we have been together for so long: it would be lovely. I am still young and there is no rush, but you never know." The couple will be entertaining both sets of family this Christmas at their house in London. "I will be cooking for 10 people, which is quite scary," she says. Rhys Meyers had previously been romantically linked to the actresses Toni Collette, who played his wife in the film Velvet Goldmine, Katie McGrath and Asia Argento, his co-star in B. Monkey. His engagement to Cha Cha Seigne, an Irish socialite and model, ended in 2002. In 2007, he was arrested in Dublin Airport and charged with being drunk and in breach of the peace. The charges were later dropped. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/celebritynews/6624128/Marriage-to-Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers-would-be-lovely-says-Reena-Hammer.html

Âåëüâåò: JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS HATES SEX SCENES Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers doesn't enjoy filming love scenes because you have to pretend to be having sex in front of lots of people. Jonathan Rhys Meyers hates shooting sex scenes because make-up gets applied to your butt. The Irish hunk thinks the least enjoyable thing about being an actor is having to get steamy with your co-stars in front of the rest of the cast and crew. He told German TV channel Tele 5: "It is embarrassing every time. You have to pretend that you're passionately making love and forget the whole world. But of course you're on set with about 20 people, a camera and a make-up woman conceals the pimples on your butt." Although Jonathan hates shooting sex scenes, the 'Match Point' star is finding his profession easier as he gets older. The 32-year-old star added: "I am now 32 and everything that has happened so far, I call my apprenticeship. The rest of my career I can loosen up." http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/jonathan-rhys-meyers-hates-sex-scenes_1124740

It has always (and I repeat, ALWAYS) been a dream of mine to just randomly meet a celebrity anywhere on the streets with no occasion/event whatsoever. And, indeed I just have!!! I was having lunch with my friend in a restaurant of a little higher class than normal. We were seated facing the entrance. Just as we got seated, and our drinks came, I saw this guy walk in. I didn't register it at first and continued talking to my friend. But like after a second, it hit me. I thought that guy looked REALLY REALLY familiar. Instantly, I knew it was Jonathan Rhys Meyers. I turned to look back at him straight away and stared! Man! I nearly ran over to give him a hug. But, obviously being in such a nice restaurant, I behaved myself. Haha.. I used to think he was quite hunky. Even though not hunky to me anymore, but still, JRM!!! OMG!!!!!!! I used to be such a big fan of him! Anyway, he went to join this table where a girl and a bald headed man were already seated. They were seated not too far way from where we were seating. When he was seated, he looked towards my direction. There was nothing behind my table, so I'm pretty sure he was looking at me. He didn't look once, but a few times! WAHAHAHAHA! It may just be me thinking that, but I don't care! While I was searching for a picture of JRM to put in the picture above, I was typing in "Jonathan Rhys Meyers" on Google. You know how when you type something, a list of recommended searches come up below? Well, below "Jonathan Rhys Meyers" was "Jonathan Rhys Meyers girlfriend" and "Jonathan Rhys Meyers Gossip". Being the curious me, I wanted to know who his she was, so I googled it. And when I saw image results, I was surprised to see a face I have seen before. It was the girl that was sitting beside him in the restaurant!!!!!!! Her name is Reena Hammer. Her dad has something to do with Harrods and her mom owns Ruby & Millie cosmetics which she will take over eventually. Âåëüâåò: Tributes Paid to Film Correspondent Michael Dwyer Michael Dwyer Tributes are pouring in from the Irish cinema and arts industry following the death of film critic and cinema promoter, Michael Dwyer, on Friday, January 1st. He was 58. Mr. Dwyer served as the film correspondent for the Irish Times for over 20 years. He was previously the film critic for several other publications including the Sunday Tribune, the Sunday Press and the In Dublin magazine. An established and admired cinematic advocate and commentator, Mr. Dwyer was also a driving force behind the promotion of Irish and international cinema. He became involved with the Film Society in his native town of Tralee, Co. Kerry in the early 1970s and went on then to establish and direct the Federation of Irish Film Societies where he organised the screenings of arthouse films across the country. Following on from this Mr. Dwyer co-founded the Dublin Film Festival in 1985, an event he was to manage and programme for years before stepping down in the mid 1990s. The festival ultimately ran into financial difficulties which lead to Mr. Dwyer becoming active in the founding of its replacement, the Dublin International Film Festival in 2002. He was also a member of the board for the Irish Museum of Modern Art until very recently. Today’s Irish Times features accolades from Mr. Dwyer’s peers and Irish cinema heavyweights such as Daniel Day Lewis, who says of the critic “He was a compassionate and empathetic writer. His criticism was not cruel or self-serving, but always honest, fair-minded, and guided by his essential love of the form itself.” Actors Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys Meyers speak of Mr. Dwyer’s support in the early days of their respective careers and Brendan Gleeson calls Mr. Dwyer “one of Irish film’s great friends – insightful lucid, always positive.” Gabriel Byrne paints a powerful image with the words “Perceptive and objective, magnanimous and uncynical.” Irish directors Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan also make contributions with the former simply stating that Dwyer was “the most delightful man imaginable. He was almost too kind at times.” And Sheridan highlighting Mr. Dwyer’s talent in his field by heralding him as the first to recognise ‘My Left Foot’ and finishing by saying “he didn’t have two sides to him.” The Irish Times’ Hugh Linehan, in the same article, describes his former colleague as “a lover of life and of movies.” and continues to describe him as “the most influential Irish film critic of his generation”. Mr. Linehan also makes reference to the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres accolade that was bestowed on Mr. Dwyer in 2006 by the French government in recognition of Mr. Dwyer’s dedication to Irish and International film. Aine Moriarty, CEO of the Irish Film & Television Academy, said, "Michael Dwyer was a true great friend of the film community in Ireland. His genuine love of the art form meant that his reviews and critiques were always honest and balanced, mixed with his innate ability to remain kind in his delivery. As a result Michael was highly respected by his readers and craftspeople/filmmakers alike and became Ireland’s most influential Irish film critic. He will be greatly missed by the film community and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful man”. Also paying tribute to Mr. Dwyer’s life and works was Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism who stated: “I am saddened to hear of the passing of Michael Dwyer. The film sector and the media have lost a passionate, dedicated enthusiast who for more than three decades has been the most singular, significant influence on cinema in Ireland.” The minister continued, saying “Michael Dwyer was passionate about film as an art form and his commentary whether on the printed page or on radio or television had a wonderful combination of knowledge and instinct. His authoritative journalism was essential reading for anyone interested in Irish and world film. He was committed to his craft, to the promotion of film and filmmaking in this country and was also known for the great impression that he gave of Ireland abroad, while interviewing many screen stars.” And concluded by stating “The film community in Ireland and abroad will miss this distinguished, knowledgeable and popular journalist. I extend my sincere sympathy to his partner Brian, mother Mary, sisters Anne and Maria at this sad time. May he rest in peace.” Mr. Dwyer died as a result of an illness which was diagnosed after the Cannes Film Festival last summer. Following a period of respite he returned to the Irish Times and described a glad return trip to world of cinema, writing “as the audience filed in all around us, I felt a deep sense of belonging and a surge of pleasure to be in a cinema after all those months, to be back where I belonged.” The film critic’s funeral will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5th at 11am in the Church of the Holy Name, Beechwood Avenue, Ranelagh, and will then move to the Mount Jerome Crematorium. http://www.iftn.ie/?act1=record&only=1&aid=73&rid=4282794&tpl=archnewshome&force=1

A roomful of beautiful, well-dressed people, all gathered to celebrate your towering achievements, and applaud vigorously as you step up to receive your Most Terrific Person of the Year award, writes KEVIN COURTNEY When the invites are sent out for this year’s big awards ceremonies, you can be sure the celebs will be swiftly rsvp-ing and rehearsing their acceptance speech for the night. But there’s one awards invite that Irish celebs handle as though it were an envelope filled with anthrax. When this awards ceremony kicks off tomorrow night at Dublin’s Sugar Club, you can be sure most of the nominees will be at home washing their hair, or will be otherwise engaged. There’s no shortage of top names on the shortlist for the third annual Gooseberry Awards – which includes Westlife, Joe Duffy, Daniel O’Donnell and Chris De Burgh – but don’t be surprised if none of them shows up on the night. The Gooseberries are Ireland’s anti-Meteors, anti-Iftas and anti-Sharks, celebrating the “worst” in Irish entertainment and media. Ireland’s celebrity bubble is a small one, but the Gooseberries are intent on bursting it in style tomorrow night, when they hand out “Goosies” to this year’s crop of celebrity chaff. “It’s meant to be self-deprecating, but not many Irish celebs are very self-deprecating,” says journalist Barbara McCarthy, who started the Gooseberries with Sugar Club manager Oisin Davis. “A lot of them have an overblown sense of their own importance, and few of them have a sense of humour, so it’s hard to persuade them to come down to collect their awards. Irony and sarcasm seem to be lost on them.” Still, McCarthy is hopeful that one or two of the nominees will show up and take it all in good spirit. She conceived the Gooseberries as an antidote to the annual back-slapping fests that clog up the Irish social calendar. The format is based on the US Raspberry awards, or the “Razzies”, which highlight the worst in Hollywood filmmaking. Leading the pack for 2009 is The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who will be given a lifetime achievement award for his ongoing role as a true divo of drama. “It’s the full-of-himself-ness, the tantrums at the airport, the dodgy moustache and the man-heels,” says McCarthy. Chris De Burgh is nominated in two categories, Worst Act of 2009 and Worst Gig of 2009 (for his Gaiety concert last autumn). Should he win in either or both categories, he’s unlikely to turn up to collect his gongs. Never fear: McCarthy has asked Paddy Casey to accept the award on Mr De Burgh’s behalf; though, if Casey agrees to do it, he may draw the line at singing The Lady in Red . “We’ve got great alternatives lined up, just in case the winners don’t turn up,” says McCarthy. “When Twink won last year, Panti made a great acceptance speech.” Other nominees include twin brother duo Jedward (Worst Irish Act), Terenure rockers The Coronas (Worst Irish Album and Worst Irish Single), journalists Kevin Myers, Brendan O’Connor and Barry Egan, and radio presenters Marty Whelan and Derek Mooney. VIP , the RTÉ Guide and The Phoenix go head to head in the Worst Irish Publication category, Harvey Norman have two nominations for Worst Irish Ad of 2009, and The All-Ireland Talent Show is neck and neck with The Afternoon Show and TV3 News for Worst Irish TV Programme. The nominees were chosen by public votes posted on the Gooseberries website (thegooseberries.com), so there’s no use complaining. Ryan Tubridy, is absent from the nominations, which can only be taken as an endorsement of his first season at the helm of The Late Late Show. The recession has reawakened the spectre of begrudgery, but McCarthy insists these awards are all about good-natured slagging – the Gooseberries may be green, but not with envy. “It’s just people asking, why do we have to endure this, or what are we paying our TV licence for? It’s a fun way to complain about all the mediocrity out there.” * The Gooseberries take place at the Sugar Club, Dublin, on Thursday at 8pm, Adm free http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/features/2010/0113/1224262198051.html

Âåëüâåò: Penguin’s Dutton and Author Lauren Willig Partner with Storycasting.com to Let Readers “Cast” The Betrayal of the Blood Lily Under-the-radar hobby of “fantasy casting” drives a fourth of readers, who cast their favorite fiction roles using film and TV stars. Storycasting has established a pattern of cross-promoting their website with books from forward-looking publishers. “Blood Lily” is the sixth and newest release by Willig, whose fans have posted over 140 casts for her works. Mesa, AZ (PRWEB) January 15, 2010 -- “Who do you see in the movie” is a question routinely asked at author events, and the fans of author Lauren Willig have posted their casting answers at Storycasting.com. For the latest book, released Tuesday January 12th, the role of English heroine Penelope Deveraux is starting out as a three-way split between popular actresses Rachel McAdams, Kate Beckinsale, and Camilla Belle. Fans have also given the nod for dashing Captain Alex Reid to Jonathan Rhys Meyers, well known for his kingly portrayal in The Tudors on Showtime television. The books, classified as “regency romance”, are based on a fictional series of Napoleonic-era spymasters, all named after flowers à la The Scarlet Pimpernel by Orczy. The entire series is highly rated by Library Journal and Publishers Weekly. Dutton, an imprint of Penguin USA, is the most recent of a growing list of publishers to co-promote with Storycasting for a book launch and title cast. Previous publisher partners include YA heavyweight Harper Teen for Splendor, “geek fiction” champion Trapdoor Books for The Magician of Lhasa, and Trilogus Media Group for the new teen vampire novel Emery. Author Willig regularly features casting posts in her blog, and has a Diversions page on her website that features Storycasting prominently. When asked about engaging her fans through a cast-the-book process, Willig replied "It's always so hard to think of things that will keep readers engaged and coming back, but [Storycasting] seems to be the gift that keeps on giving." The site creators confirmed that significant site traffic comes from authors who cast and blog, and that Willig’s fans are large contributors. “Our site automatically tracks the books most frequently cast in a rolling 30-day period, and Lauren Willig books currently fill all five of the top slots.” Storycasting LLC started in Arizona in 2007, and the website went “live” in May of 2008. Early participation from writers like Pay It Forward author Catherine Ryan Hyde and Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the King, has boosted the site to international prominence as a premier destination for those who use it “for the movie in your mind”. The site is also used by fans who want to “cast” comics, graphic novels, TV and movie remakes, poetry, old movies, podcasts, and video games. http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/01/prweb3447434.htm

Âåëüâåò: Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais is catching flak for his anti-Irish joke aimed at actor Colin Farrell as he prepared to make his entrance at Sunday night's ceremony. We had dozens of calls to our offices all this week complaining. Gervais, sipping a beer on stage was certainly up for mischief."The great thing about the Golden Globes is that it crushes prejudice and stereotypes." he began. "A particular stereotype is that Irishmen are drunk, hairy hell raisers. Now please welcome Colin Farrell. Farrell did not look too pleased with the mocking introduction but let's face it he has been called worse, the 'Lusty Leprechaun' among other names. The British actor had earlier thrown the same accusation at Mel Gibson, whose mother comes from Ireland. 'I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the man in Mel Gibson' he said. Now some Irish were obviously deeply insulted.Others less so. Gervais has a cutting edge humor not often seen over here. But in this case I can't really blame him.Just look at Irish actors who have become famous. Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole , Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Colin Farrell in his heyday. Yes, drunkards all and proud of it too. Of course Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson would be the exceptions but the Hollywood drunk Irishman is a stereotype --not without reason I'm afraid. Gervais was only stating the obvious. http://www.irishcentral.com/story/news/periscope/was-drunken-irishman-jibe-by-british-actor-offensive-82218032.html

Abrams, Saoirse Ronan and Seamus McGarvey at the fifth annual "Oscar Wilde: Honoring The Irish in Film," Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Ebell of Los Angeles. Colum McCann, a 2009 National Book Award winner will emcee. Irish band Bell X1 will perform. The US-Ireland Alliance's intimate, casual party has become a must-have ticket the week before the Academy Awards. The event has led to collaboration among artists and businesses for both countries. After being honored nearly two years ago, James L. Brooks created an episode of The Simpsons about an Irish pub. He visited Ireland in March to premiere the episode, which featured his co-honoree Colm Meaney, and performers Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Fiona Shaw, who was honored with Brooks and Meaney, saw singer Duke Special perform that evening, leading to the Belfast singer-songwriter joining Fiona in the cast of Mother Courage and Her Children at the National Theatre in London. A concert has become a highlight of the evening, and has included performances by Van Morrison, Hansard and Irglova, Duke Special, Laura Izibor, Gemma Hayes and the Republic of Loose. Singers Paddy Casey and S.J. McArdle performed at the first Oscar Wilde event and subsequently received US recording contracts. Âåëüâåò: JONATHAN RHYS MEYERS' BLIND LOVE Jonathan Rhys Meyers claims he could easily fall in love with someone he didn't know very much about. Jonathan Rhys Meyers thinks love is blind. The actor - who portrays character James Reece, an aide to a US Ambassador in France and secret CIA agent, in upcoming action film 'From Paris with Love' - thinks it is easy to fall for someone without knowing much about them, just like his alter-ego does in the film. He explained: "Well, you know, love is blind. Really, how much do you know about your partner? "He knows that she makes dresses, he knows that she's into fabric, but he's a naive guy anyway. It's not like he's being specifically naive because she's so fantastically beautiful, yet it's jarring and that's why she's there. He'll go for her blindly because the beauty, the charm, the elegance, he's living in Paris. This is the dream. "Would I fall for it in real life? Absolutely! 100 per cent! Hook, line and sinker." The 32-year-old hunk is currently single, and most recently had a four year on/off relationship with Reena Hammer, the daughter of Ruby + Millie cosmetics founder Ruby Hammer. http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/jonathan-rhys-meyers-blind-love_1131250

Âåëüâåò: NEW YORK – On the surface, Tudor tyrant Henry VIII and rock legend Elvis Presley would seem to have nothing in common. Except for one thing – both have been portrayed by a guy from Ireland's County Cork. Jonathan Rhys Meyers picked up a Golden Globe Award for his eerily authentic portrayal of Presley in the 2004 TV miniseries, Elvis. And he has received two Golden Globe nominations for his highly personal take on the despotic, womanizing King Henry VIII on the hit miniseries The Tudors, which launches its fourth and final season in April. Meyers has also scored for his portrayal as a social-climbing killer in Woody Allen's Match Point, a sympathetic football coach in Bend It Like Beckham, a young assassin in Michael Collins, and a glittering David Bowie-type singer in The Velvet Goldmine. There's a point to this calculated virtuosity, reflecting Rhys Meyers's determination to show his range – or, as he once put it, to allow audiences to see the "very many different layers of what I can do as an actor." Now, with the current From Paris With Love, he's fulfilled another longtime yearning – to make a genuine action thriller and buddy movie. And he's hoping that he and co-star John Travolta provide a classic combination. "I think what separates an action movie from a classic movie is the chemistry between the actors doing it," Rhys Meyers says. "If they're liking each other and they're liking the story, they're on. Why does Lethal Weapon work? Because Danny Glover and Mel Gibson worked with each other. You see the energy – they play off each other very well. You get some partnerships that just mean more." He cites the definitive buddy movie – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. "If that had been Robert Redford with Warren Beatty (instead of Paul Newman) would it have been the same movie? Who knows? It's the energy that carries it." Which brings him back to From Paris With Love and his role as James Reece, an uptight but ambitious personal aide to U.S. Ambassador in Paris. Reece has a side job as a low-level CIA operative and his big ambition is to make the grade as a full-fledged spy and see some real action. He ends up getting more than he bargained for when he teams up with Travolta's profane, trigger-happy Charlie Wax, a special agent who is bound by no rules as he launches a furious assault on a terrorist ring. He's the sort of guy who will think nothing of leaning out of a careening vehicle and firing a bazooka in Paris traffic. Rhys Meyers says that being paired with Travolta was a happy accident and he'll be eternally grateful to his co-star as well as producer Luc Besson and director Pierre Morel for making it possible. "If I (didn't) have somebody like John there, I'm not sure if it would work for me. I had to have somebody I could play off." Rhys Myers had a tight schedule with this one. He'd been working on The Tudors back in London on a Wednesday, and a day later was in Paris where he was immediately thrust into a pivotal scene with Travolta. In a sequence where an enraged Charlie Wax is on the verge of trashing a French customs and immigration office, Rhys Meyers didn't immediately recognize this ranting specimen with the shaved head and facial hair as the guy he once worshipped in Grease. "The first time I and John really had face time with each other was in that scene where I have to go in and bust him out of the customs office," Rhys Meyers says. "I'd seen John in many films, but I hadn't seen John like that, you know. I didn't know what to expect." But the 32-year-old actor says that he and Travolta immediately clicked. "James Reece's character – my character – expects a sophisticated, elegant, worldly James Bond to turn up. And what he gets is a biker boy – minus the Harley-Davidson but with pretty much everything else. James has dreams of what a spy is going to be like. He dreams of what a sophisticated undercover life is. But the reality is that it's a dirty job. James doesn't have the cynicism that Wax has, but James has the naivete that Wax enjoys. Wax enjoys seeing him be confused. He enjoys seeing him get a punch. He enjoys seeing him being shocked at the shootings, because there's only one way to train somebody and that's to throw him into the deep end. It was great." Rhys Meyers had one major problem with the film's action demands. "I don't like heights," he says. "For example, I had to run up these steel stairs, and I'm not a good height guy." One scene involved carrying a vase full of cocaine up those stairs, and much to his embarrassment, he dropped the vase. "It was in the middle of the shot. John's still running – he's like three floors ahead of me, and I had to go all the way down again. It was just awful." http://www.kelowna.com/2010/02/08/henry-the-eighth-he-isnt-irelands-jonathan-rhys-meyers-wants-to-prove-his-versatility/
