Вельвет: Special Olympics athletes 'such an inspiration' says Cranberries singer Dolores THE Special Olympics Ireland games, which began in Limerick this Thursday morning, were opened in spectacular fashion on Wednesday night as more than 15,000 people filled Thomond Park for the opening ceremony. The athletes, their families and thousands of supporters enjoyed the unique occasion which was headlined by the Cranberries, who performed live in Limerick for the first time since 1993. "You guys are such an inspiration, you're amazing, you're such an inspiration with so much courage hope and love," said lead singer Dolores O'Riordan as she took to the stage, which was specially erected on the North Terrace. The huge crowds were also entertained by performances throughout the event from the Limerick Gospel Choir, The Munster Rugby Choir the Heathers and the Daghdha-Garvey initiative. Five baskets of white doves were released into the stadium from the giant stage and there was also an impressive flyover by four Aer-Corps PC9 planes, which are based at Baldonnell Aerodrome. Celebrities who attended on the night included MC's Des Cahill and Ian Dempsey, Breffny Morgan from the Apprentice, television presenter Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh, Micheal O Muircheartaigh and rugby stars Paul O'Connell, Keith Wood and Simon Best. Good luck messages from stars such as Colin Farrell, Westlife, Miriam O'Callaghan O'Callaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Bernard Dunne, Jon Voight, Brendan Gleeson and the late Gerry Ryan were played to the crowd on a giant television screen. I just felt it was a way for me to invest my money into somebody that I loved very much.' And there was a fine-looking man at the table, nothing spectacular, but very amiable and intelligent, and she was ignoring him. 'Later on, someone asked a question, and someone else pointed at the man and said, "Well, why don't you ask him? He just sold his company for three billion." Well, on the "three billion" her head span round so fast I thought it would spin out of the restaurant, and she did not leave his earhole for the rest of the evening. 'Suddenly, he stopped being just a fine-looking man and became a celebrity. And that's what it's like.' The woman in his own life, Reena Hammer, 24, who is the creative director of Urban Retreat, the beauty company founded by her father, George, is neither vacuous nor overly impressed by celebrity. She was reportedly the one who gave him the recent ultimatum, 'Back to rehab or I quit'. 'I care for Reena more than I've cared for anyone,' he says. 'She's so amazing. 'We've been together for five or six years now, we're very good friends. Having loved her for so long has changed my whole idea of relationships with women.' So what's next for Rhys Meyers? He seems poignantly aware that, before sorting out his future, he may have to confront his past. By and large however this is not the rule. No doubt Irish accents have evolved over the past several decades – listening to recordings of W.B.
